Marriage – For whose sake?

There is a tradition of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) that “whoever among you can afford it, let him get married”. Marriage in Islam is one of the most loved relationships in the eyes of Allah. So it is only natural that we should enter into it for the sake of pleasing Allah. Unfortunately, in our society this does not happen due to either lack of knowledge or due to practices picked up from other religions which have no basis in Islam.

So whose sake do the people enter marriage for? There are a lot of different reasons that people enter marriage, the last one which is usually that for the sake of Allah. Some people enter marriage to attain to the rules of society and get a life partner just to get over with, some people are forced into marriage by their parents and some get married to avoid zina. All the above reasons for getting married are not acceptable in Islam.

In Islam marriage is seen as a beautiful relationship and hence the true beauty of it only comes when it is done with and for beautiful intentions. And what can be more beautiful than the mercy and blessings of Allah. For when a husband and wife in marriage look at each other with love, Allah looks at both with mercy.

So we must make sure never to marry for any other reason or for anyone’s sake except for the pleasure of Allah when you have found your soul mate. Don’t listen to other people’s wishes or commands and in turn disobey Allah’s. So when anyone asks you for whose sake you are getting married, your answer should always be the same, “for Allah’s sake”.
