Sura Al-Alaq : The initiation of inscription process and owner of knowledge


Sura Al-Alaq is the 96th sura of Holy Quran. The first five ayats of this sura are the first revealed ayats of Islam’s Holy Book. Some scholars call the sura as “Iqra” since it is the first word of the sura and some call it “Al-Qalem” since it mentions “reading and writing by pen” but the majority of Muslim scholars agree on its name as “Sura Al-Alaq”

By starting the Holy Book as “Read” it is obvious about the emphasizing of education and scientific studies in Islamic aqeedah. However, the fourth ayats indicates something important for mankind on their quest to evaluate knowledge:

Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created-

Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:

Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,-

He Who taught (the use of) the pen,-

Taught man that which he knew not. (Sura Al-Alaq 96/1-5)

That man should not forget that Allah(j.j) is the One who has taught mankind to use the pen, to teach about how to obtain, preserve and share knowledge. Unfortunately, throughout centuries mankind used knowledge as a weapon and acted as if he is the sole owner of it and claimed that himself achieved his epistemological status, thus leading him into arrogance.

However, Holy Quran strongly suggests us not be in vain just because we can learn, produce and share information. We should never forget that our mental faculties are one of the greatest gift Allah(j.j) has ever allocated and granted to us.

We should also note that in some translations of Holy Quran in English, the word recite is used instead reading or proclaim. Some mufassirs suggests that this “iqra” command is given to Prophet Muhammad(saw) by Allah(j.j) as if to say “We will reveal Quran to you and thou shall recite it loudly to mankind to invite them to it”

In some other translation, the word Honorable is used instead of Bountiful, to translate “Al-akramu”. In both cases, we are reminded to consider “knowledge” as some sort of gift, something precious.

In the rest of the sura, which was revealed later on, is about a personality who tries to prohibit the believer from performing his duties against Allah(j.j), the typical tyranny by the usual rebellious type. Perhaps this is to form the relationship between the person who reads and writes in the name of Allah(j.j) and the person who is swimming in vain and ignorance.

The person who reads and studies and knows that knowledge is a gift from Allah(j.j) will stay away from such personality patiently and solemnly, something mankind needs desperately today, where masses are engulfed in “non-valuable knowledge gain” and act as if they are the only ones who can possess and process that knowledge.

Holy Quran was initiated in its revelation to Prophet Muhammad(saw) by indicating that all knowledge come from Allah(j.j) and goes back to Him and is for Him.

We continue examining some ayats from Holy Quran that would constitute as “notes for Personal development”

Ar-Rahman 55/7-8-9: Embrace balanced decision and firm judgement by taking inspiration from the perfect order of the universe. Since this order has been meticulously designed by Allah(j.j), it will give you deeper insight about how and why you should stick to sober and fair judgement as if you are walking on a line of universal equilibrium.

And the Firmament has He raised high, and He has set up the Balance (of Justice),

In order that ye may not transgress (due) balance.

So establish weight with justice and fall not short in the balance(Ar-Rahman 55/7-8-9)

At-Takathur 102/1-2: Pride and Lust for material possessions goes hand in hand and they fuel each other. In the end, only you’ll poison your own life by forgetting the simple fact that the world’s most expensive casket won’t save your body from decomposition. And while six feet under, nobody will witness the elaborate design of that casket, you’ll only waste your money or your children’s.

The mutual rivalry for piling up (the good things of this world) diverts you (from the more serious things),

Until ye visit the graves.(At-Takathur 102/1-2)

At-Tawba 9/40:  Even in the worst case scenario, never lose your temper, patience and hope. This ayat mentions the “incident at the Thawr cave” where Prophet Muhammad(saw) and his companion Abu-Bakr(ra) were hiding from a gang of assassins hired by Meccan’s moguls.

Striking a firm balance of temper, patience and hope is the real key to have a strong character. Here, extra importance should be laid for the sum of these three virtues since each one of them is not enough, all three should be found in one’s soul, at the same time : Keeping temper, patience and hope. One can keep his temper but due to his passive-aggressive personality, he can still be impatient. One can have too much “hope” and sings songs about it but can lose temper easily if that exuberant spirit leads to manic-depressive mood.

So, more than anything else, a soul needs control of temper, and an abundant source of patience and unconditional hope.

If ye help not (your leader), (it is no matter): for Allah did indeed help him, when the Unbelievers drove him out: he had no more than one companion; they two were in the cave, and he said to his companion, “Have no fear, for Allah is with us”: then Allah sent down His peace upon him, and strengthened him with forces which ye saw not, and humbled to the depths the word of the Unbelievers. But the word of Allah is exalted to the heights: for Allah is Exalted in might, Wise.(At-Tawba 9/40)

Sura Al-Kafiroon : Quranic Answer to Political Correctness


This sura has been revealed in Mecca, during the very turbulent times when the tyrannical moguls of Mecca was at full work trying to stop Prophet Muhammad(saw) fulfilling his divine task, calling humanity to Islam’s message.

For many intricate reasons that are beyond the scope of this article, the moguls accepted or had the tendency to settle up on many accounts with Rasulullah(saw) except for one thing : Whatever order or demands he might bring forth, they still wanted to keep their “idols” at work, or some of them at least.

They adhered to their idols infatuatedly.

Strangely enough, this mentality didn’t reject a omni-potent creator. They believed in Allah(j.j). However, they still wanted to keep the “intermediary idols” at the Kaba, they still wanted to celebrate their ancestral traditions of “paganism and idolatry”, which gave them many excuses to maintain their “capitalist and fascist” political system.

Since they believed in Allah(j.j) just like Prophet Muhammad(saw) did, they thought there was a common ground between them and him. They insisted on the idea that the two parties could find a way to for agreement as if Prophet Muhammad(saw) was one concessionaire of a party.

He wasn’t.

Allaj(j.j) told him to bring this message of “tahwed” to mankind, he was just doing what he was supposed to be doing, by the will of Allaj(j.j) only.

There was no other way to “settle down” without accepting “tahweed”, uniqueness and oneness of Allah(j.j) and rejecting every form of idolatry and man-made deities.

Prophet Muhammad(saw) would not agree their “terms”. Since they didn’t understand, perhaps didn’t wanted to, Allah(j.j) is not some sort of “entity” who could be on the other side of some sort of “mundane” agreement.

You don’t propose your terms to Allah(j.j), he is the only proprietor and creator of the known and unknown life in the universe. But during those times, these moguls seemed to be unaware of this and they kept finding a way to “bargain” with Prophet Muhammad(saw).

He wouldn’t be bought with enormously attractive mundane offers.

Because this beautiful, strikingly simply yet effective sura, Sura-Al-Kafiroon instructed him, therefore us, to stand firmly on the ground of “tahweed”.

O ye that reject Faith!

I worship not that which ye worship,

Nor will ye worship that which I worship.

And I will not worship that which ye have been wont to worship,

Nor will ye worship that which I worship.

Unto you your religion, and unto me my religion. (Al Kafiroon 109/1-6)

This instruction doesn’t mean to cut of all ties or communications with “those who reject Faith”.

However, every Muslim should keep in mind that there is no “bending” in the very first rule of Islam, tahweed. This sura closes the door to every kind of “political correctness” as well.

You can’t appear to follow “another deity along with Allah(j.j)” to please a certain group or society or to gain position for a certain amount of time.

Sura At-Takathur : Bragging about plenitude and what is wrong about it


Takathur is a short, Meccan sura that warns mankind about the perils of showing off and bragging about worldly possessions and the consequences of such actions if one pursuit them until it becomes a life-style.

Everyone in contemporary world, except a tiny fraction, would criticize “the system of capitalism” at every possible chance. In other words, everyone is part of 99%. However, all these members of “insert fancy word in lie of lost” generation would probably be oblivious to the fact that Holy Quran gave a short recipe 14 centuries ago to stand firm in such criticism of modern world against all forms of capitalism or any other cutt-throat manipulative and exploitative monetary system.

This short recipe is deciphered in the tafsir of Sura-At-Takathur: The human psyche of being passionate about what you own:

The mutual rivalry for piling up (the good things of this world) diverts you (from the more serious things),

Until ye visit the graves. ( At-Takathur 102/1-2)

Every man-made social system can only have one combustion: it is the very human factor that created that system in the first place. There is no capitalism if it wasn’t for human greed. There is no need for “intricate explanations” of science of economics only some experts can understand, if masses of humans didn’t enjoy indulging themselves for saving and bragging about their worldly possessions.

Humans do enjoy bragging about their possessions. Quran Tafsir history tells us that two Arabic tribes’ members wanted race about their wealth and power and started a verbal battle about it. In the end, they consumed all of their inventory in their list so they rushed to the graves to account their deceased members of their tribes.

They wanted brag about the plenitude of their wealth and tribal power, the visible inventory of the living world wasn’t enough.

So, the Holy Quran warns them: You visit the graves to count the dead whom once belonged to each of your tribe and you want to brag about them but you visited the graves while doing so. Don’t you see? All the bragging in the world about worldly possessions can not be adequate to solve the eternal and the core problem all human will face: We’re all going to die and the plentitude of your wealth and power in this world won’t save you on the judgement day.

Ye shall certainly see Hell-Fire!

Again, ye shall see it with certainty of sight!

Then, shall ye be questioned that Day about the joy (ye indulged in!). (At-Takathur 102/6-7-8)

There is no need to dwell into “system critique”, without touching deepest problem that every human faces throughout the course of their lives : Giving too much importance to worldly possessions, to such a degree that substitute as a remedy for our spiritual problems and mental demands and motivations.

Once bragging becomes a habit, bragging about plentitude becomes a life-style and the soul is already a slave to a system without being aware of it.

Holy Quran warns us that sooner or later, even if we brag about worldly possession or not, we’ll visit graves.

It is better to visit graves to “tafakkur” about life and death rather than to boost our ego about our ancestral beings’ antecedent achievements.

Or maybe it is better not to brag about anything in life at all.

Quran Tafsir : Sura Al Kahf


This sura which has been revealed in Mecca is the 18th sura in the Holy Quran. It has been named after “a group of people living in the cave”, since Al-Kahf means cave in Arabic. That chapter, which will be discussed briefly below is considered as name-giver for this sura. It tells the qissa(news-story) of “People of Cave”, Ashab-u Al-Kahf

Kahf means wide cave located inside a mountain. Some scholars note that delving into deeper meanings of this sura will propagate such a meaning that, this sura is in fact like a cave, if Holy Quran can be considered as a mountain. Because if one enters this “cave”, one shall find some of the most substantial and thought-provoking stories of the Holy Quran, such as meeting of Prophet Moses(a.s) and Al-Kidhr and travels of Dhul-Qarnayn.

The reason and circumstances of revelation for this sura is to generate a reply to non-believers who tried to conspire and dared to challenge Prophet Muhammed (saw) on intellectual and historical grounds. Ibni Ishaq notes that there was Nadr b. Hâris of Quraish tribe who tried to interfere any time Prophet Muhammed (saw) was preaching the public, claiming to deliver “better stories” than the Prophet himself.

Other moguls of Quraish wanted to exploit this man in order to reduce the influence of Prophet’s message upon the public. Along with him, they sent Ukbe b. Mu’ayt to the jewish rabbis of Madina. The rabbis induced the two to challenge Prophet Muhammed (saw) by asking about “the young people of the cave in ancient times, and the traveler who reached the eastern and westers edges of the earth and any information about human soul”

Sura Al-Kahf has done more than just answering these questions and washing away the doubts of non-believers as it starts with the warning of “Praise be to Allah, Who hath sent to His Servant the Book, and hath allowed therein no Crookedness”, which is the first verse of this sura, to inform mankind not to doubt the divinity of Holy Quran according many Turkish mufassirs like Abu Suud Efendy and Mehmed Wahbi of Konya and Hamdee Yazeer of Elmali.

First qissa is the inspiring story of People of cave, where these young brave men has been enduring a test of faith and they have ascertained themselves not to return to the paganist traditions of their society after they have been blessed with “tawheed”, Allah’s(j.j) one-ness and uniqueness. They sought refugee in a cave, where Allah(j.j) granted them more than physical shelter, by miraculously putting them into “hyper-sleep” so that they can survive for very long time by-passing the tyranny of their own society.

Second qissa is the story of an anonymous poor and an anonymous rich, where the rich forgets about the poor as he is buried in his own mundane duties of protecting his wealth and tries to distance himself from the poor, unsurprisingly and universally, since it is what most rich people do.

Third qissa is the meeting of Prophet Moses(a.s) and Al-Kidhr which we hope to discuss in an article of its own since mysterious personality of AL-Kidhr has been inspirational to many sufi traditions and his meeting with Prophet Moses(a.s) is like a conundrum of “ilm-i ladun” which is “the study of divine secrets”.

Fourth qissa is the story of Dhul-Qarnayn, which we should mention him in great detail in another article inshaAllah. There are several different of interpretations of his qissa in classic tafsirs but one notably quite contrary as Turkish writer-scholar Iskender Ture basically suggest the possibility of Dhul Qarnayn travels was of a interstellar nature in his book “Dhul Qarnayn”, published in 1998 in Turkey

Despite different interprations of these qissas in Sura Al Kahf, one thing is certain. Prophet Muhammed(saw) stated the virtues of Sura Al Kahf;

“Whoever reads Sura Kahf on Friday, light shall shine forth for him between the two Fridays.” according to a hadith in Al-Mustadrak alaa al-Sahihain, by Hakim al-Nishaburi.

And;

“He who amongst you would survive to see The False Messiah, Ad-Dajjal, should recite over him the opening verses of Sura Kahf”

“And He taught Adam the names of all things…”


And He taught Adam the names of all things; then He placed them before the angels, and said: “Tell me the names of these if you are truthful.” 

They said: “Glory be to You! We possess no knowledge save what You have taught us. Indeed, You alone are All-Knowing, the Wise.” 

He said: “O Adam! Inform them of their names.” When he had informed them, Allah said: “Did I not tell you that I know what is unseen in the heavens and on Earth, and I know what you reveal and what you hide?” [Sūrah al-Baqarah: 31-33]

It is from Allah’s kindness and immense favor to us that he has endowed the human being with the ability to learn. Allah has given us our unique faculties for acquiring knowledge. 

When Allah created Adam (peace be upon him), the angels exclaimed in surprise: “Are you placing (on Earth) one who will do harm therein and shed blood, while we hymn Your praise and sanctify You?” [Sūrah al-Baqarah: 30] 

But Allah commanded the angels to prostrate before Adam, and He explained to them that the way in which Adam enjoyed superiority to them was because: “He taught Adam the names of all things.” [Sūrah al-Baqarah: 31] 

Then Allah commanded the angels to inform the things of their names. When they were unable to do so, they replied: “Glory be to You! We possess no knowledge save what You have taught us.” [Sūrah al-Baqarah: 32] 

Then Allah turned to Adam and said: “Inform them of their names.” 

When Adam did so, Allah addressed the angels saying: “Did I not tell you that I know what is unseen in the heavens and on Earth, and I know what you reveal and what you hide?” [Sūrah al-Baqarah: 33] 

Humanity has inherited from Adam the ability to acquire knowledge. We are able to learn about the world around us and the things that it contains. We have the power of language and the ability to reason. This is from Allah’s immense favor upon us. 

Allah has bestowed this ability upon us as part of our natural development. We start out as infants, then children, then adolescents, and then adults. At each stage our minds develop and we acquire new abilities. This determination of our lives is part of what Allah refers to when He says: “Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High, who creates, and further, gives order and proportion, and who makes (things) according to their due measure, then guides (them to their goal)…” [Sūrah al-A`lā: 1-4] 

Allah guides all living things to what they need to know in order to sustain their lives and ensure the continued existence of their kind on Earth. For instance, He guides animals so that the male and female know each other. 

But human beings He guides further, providing us with the special abilities and faculties that we use to enhance our lives upon the Earth. Indeed, “your Lord is most generous. He who taught by way of the pen. He has taught humanity what they did not know.” [Sūrah al-`Alaq: 3-5] 

Allah has given us, through our power of reason, the ability to make discoveries about our universe. We are inventive and creative. We can uncover patterns in Creation and deduce from them scientific laws. We can harness this knowledge for our benefit, and we can see around us how technology has facilitated many aspects of our lives, most conspicuously in recent years in our rapidly developing communications technologies. 

No doubt, some of our technical progress has brought harm to humanity, because we have too often severed the connection between our knowledge and our relationship with our Lord. As a consequence, some of our knowledge has been harnessed by people to kill and destroy or to the detriment of human life. 

Nevertheless, Allah has given humanity the ability to invent and be creative. When we use these gifts in positive ways that please Him and enhance human welfare, we are in fact worshipping our Lord.

“Surely I am near. I answer the prayers of the suppliants when they beseech Me.”


Allah says: “And when My servants ask you (O Muhammad) about Me, then surely I am near. I answer the prayers of the suppliants when they beseech Me. So let them hear My call and let them trust in Me, in order that they may be led aright.” [Sūrah al-Baqarah: 186]

Allah brings up this verse right in the middle of a long discussion about fasting. By bringing up supplications while speaking about the fast, He eloquently brings these two acts of worship together. 

In this verse, Allah moves from addressing the believers in general about fasting to addressing the Prophet in particular, telling him to remind them of the devotion and sincerity they are supposed to cultivate through fasting, particularly that they should turn to Allah alone with their prayers and supplications. 

Indeed , Allah is still addressing the believers in general. He does not say “Tell the believers I am near.” He replies to the question directly, saying “surely I am near.” 

Then he goes on to explain what this nearness means, that He answers the supplications of those who beseech Him. This addresses the matter the Prophet’s Companions were concerned about. The question they had originally posed to him was: “Is Allah near so we should commune with Him or far away so we should call out to Him?” 

Another aspect of Allah’s nearness is that He knows everything about us, what we profess openly as well as our deepest secrets. He says: “Verily, We created the human being and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.” [Sūrah Qāf: 16] 

To offer supplications (du`ā’) to Allah is to beseech Him for everything that concerns us in this world and the Hereafter. In doing so, we profess our dependency on Allah, recognize that we need Him, and reveal that we possess no strength or might of our own. It is the clearest expression of sincere faith. 

Prophet Muhammad said: “Allah is angry with those who do not ask of Him.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhī (3373)] 

He also said: “Supplication is the greatest act of worship.” [Mustadrak al-Hākim (1/491)] 

Significantly, he said: “Supplication is essentially what worship is.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhī (2969)] 

In this way, the Prophet indicated that supplication is not just the best form of worship, but that it comprehends all other forms of worship. After making this statement, he recited the following verse of the Qur’an: “And your Lord said: Call upon me in supplication. I will answer you.” [Sūrah Ghāfir: 60] 

He also said: “The stingiest of people are those who are stingy in greeting people with peace. The most incapable of all people are those who are incapable of beseeching Allah in supplication.” [Sahīh Ibn Hibbān (4498)] 

He said: “Whenever any Muslim on Earth beseeches Allah in supplication, Allah will either give him what he asks for or remove from him an evil commensurate to what he asked for, as long as he does not ask for something sinful or ask to break ties of kinship.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhī (3573)] 

The Prophet related to us that Allah says: “I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he calls upon Me.” [Sahīh Muslim (2675)]

Alif Lam Mim- The Letters that Begin the Chapters of the Qur'an


Allah says: "Alîf Lâm Mîm" [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 1]

Initial, disjoined letters introduce 29 chapters of the Qur'ân. Different chapters begin with different letters: Alîf Lâm Mîm... Kâf Hâ Yâ... `Ayn Sâd... Tâ Sîn Mîm... among other combinations. People often wonder about their meaning. In truth, we cannot ascribe any particular meaning to these letters. Any particular meaning that these letters might have is known only to Allah. Ibn Kathîr, in his Tafsîr, informs us that Abu Bakr, `Umar, `Uthman, `Ali and Ibn Mas`ud all said that "the disjoined letters in the beginning of some chapters are among those things about which Allah has reserved knowledge to Himself."

However, this does not imply that these letters are meaningless or that they do not serve a clear and discernable function for those who read and listen to the Qur'ân. There is a general meaning that can be understood from all of the letters. These letters serve to highlight the literary nature of the Qur'ân. 

Ibn Jarîr al-Tabarî, in his Tafsîr, gives us a survey of what early scholars of the Arabic language have explained about this stylistic device. 

Some language scholars state that these are letters of the alphabet and that Allah suffices with them for the entire alphabet of twenty-eight letters... 

Others say that the chapters begin this way in order to draw the attention of the polytheists – who had called each other to ignore the Qur'ân – so that when their attention was gotten, they would listen to what was understandable. 

Others say these letters are a means of introducing the chapters. Allah begins his discourse by using them. 

If one were to argue that this implies that the Qur'ân contains meaningless words, they explain that this is not the case. The meaning here is that the discourse is starting, so it is known that a new chapter is beginning and the previous one has ended. It serves to distinguish between speech acts. This is something known in the speech of the Arabs. 

Introducing a speech with disjoined letters as a stylistic means for beginning an eloquent discourse was not strange to the people at the time that the Qur’ân was revealed. This is why the unbelievers in Mecca never made an issue out of these letters, though they would go to great pains to find whatever they could to criticize Islam. 

The mention of disjoined alphabet letters introduces to the listeners the idea that what follows is constructed from mere letters and words. This literary device is used to precede a discourse of literary eloquence. The one who introduces his discourse in this way is emphasizing that he is going to bring forth a feat of great eloquence from such simple materials. 

We find that the Qur’ân often uses this stylistic device when it begins chapters in which it refers to itself. “Alîf Lâm Mîm... This is the Book in which there is no doubt.” [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 1-2] 

“Alîf Lâm Mîm... Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-Subsisting, Eternal. It is He Who sent down to thee, in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Torah and the Gospel before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong).” [Sûrah Âl `Imrân: 1-3] 

“Alîf Lâm Mîm Sâd... A Book revealed unto thee,- So let thy heart be oppressed no more by any difficulty on that account,- that with it thou might warn (the erring) and teach the believers. [Sûrah al-A`râf: 1-2] 

“Alîf Lâm Râ... These are the verses of the Book of Wisdom.” [Sûrah Yûnus: 1] 

“Alîf Lâm Râ... (This is) a Book, whose verses are made decisive, then are they made plain, from the Wise, All-aware.” [Sûrah Hûd: 1] 

“Alîf Lâm Râ... These are the verses of the Book that makes (things) manifest.” [Sûrah Yûsuf: 1] 

“Alîf Lâm Mîm Râ... These are the verses of the Book; and that which is revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, but most people do not believe.” [Sûrah al-Ra`d: 1] 

“Alîf Lâm Râ... A Book which We have revealed unto thee, in order that you might lead mankind out of the depths of darkness into light - by the leave of their Lord - to the Way of (Him) the Exalted in power, worthy of all praise!” [Sûrah Ibrâhîm: 1] 

“Alîf Lâm Râ... These are the verses of the Book and (of) a Quran that makes (things) clear.” [Sûrah al-Hijr: 1] 

“Kâf Hâ Yâ `Ayn Sâd... (This is) a recital of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zachariah.” [Sûrah Maryam 1-2] 

“Tâ Hâ...We have not sent down the Qur'an to thee to be (an occasion) for thy distress, but only as an admonition to those who fear (Allah) – a revelation from Him Who created the earth and the heavens on high.” [Sûrah Tâ Hâ: 1-4] 

“Tâ Sîn Mîm... These are verses of the Book that makes (things) clear.” [Sûrah al-Shu`arâ’: 1-2] 

“Tâ Sîn Mîm... These are Verses of the Book that makes (things) clear. [Sûrah al-Qasas: 1-2] 

This should give us a feeling of how this stylistic device is used. The Qur’ân also uses this device on occasion to introduce chapters where it does not directly refer to itself, but goes straight into making its exposition. Even in these cases, however, the use of these letters is a reference to the nature of the Qur’ân as a literary entity. The device essentially foregrounds the linguistic nature of the message being imparted. 

Some Muslims began speculating as to why certain letters are used to introduce certain chapters and other letters to introduce others. This is needless speculation, since it does not bear upon the fundamental purpose or meaning of the literary device itself. We should leave to Allah the knowledge of why He chooses certain letters over others in various chapters. 

A problem arose in the Muslim world when some people began reading cryptic meanings into the letters. This led scholars of those generations to re-emphasize the fact that we do not know the “meaning” of these letters and must not try to concoct baseless interpretations. Such statements should never be understood to mean that these letters are meaningless and serve no function. The statements of those scholars merely warns against supplying specific interpretations to the letters, when we have no basis or authority for doing so. 

Of course, there may be aspects to the wisdom behind these opening letters other than the one we have mentioned here. However, aside from their clear and apparent literary function, we need to be cautious about speculating on what these letters mean. 

Ibn Kathîr gives us good advice when he says:
If we find an authentic narration leading to the Prophet (peace be upon him) that explains these letters, we will embrace the Prophet's statement. Otherwise, we will stop where we were made to stop and will proclaim: 

"We believe in it. All of it is from our Lord." [Sûrah Âl `Imrân: 7] 

The scholars did not concur on a single opinion or explanation on this topic. Therefore, whoever thinks that one scholar's opinion is correct, he can follow it; otherwise it is better to refrain from making any judgment on this matter.

Kelebihan Madu Lebah.


Firman Allah SWT dalam Al-Quran surah An-Nahl ayat 69 :

"Dan Tuhanmu mewahyukan kepada lebah: “Buatlah sarang-sarang di bukit-bukit, di pohon-pohon kayu, dan di tempat yang dibikin manusia." [QS. An-Nahl : 68]

Anda tentu sedia maklum ALLAH S.W.T telah memberi kelebihan kepada lebah dengan kekuasaannya mengeluarkan madu asli dari perutnya memberi manfaat dan berkhasiat kepada setiap manusia menggunakannya.

Madu ialah bahan cairan yang membersih (menyah toksik) , menyembuh, membanteras racun, menambah selera dan kecergasan. Madu membantu berperanan sebagai pemangkin kesihatan manusia kerana ia menggerakkan sel-sel (tisu) baru, mempunyai daya pencergas, mampu membaiki tisu yang rosak, kaya dengan glukos serta bahan makanan yang berperanan membentuk sel manakala Vitamin A,B dan C di dalamnya sebagai makanan anggota badan, menumbuh dan memeliharanya.

Vitamin utama dan enzim dalam madu berperanan mencergaskan otak, menggilap dan memberi daya pengingat. Enzim membantu metabolisma (penukaran zat) makanan.Madu menambah dan mengembangkan ‘glycogen’ dalam hati, membersihkan hati dari racun dan kuman serta memberi tenaga kepada badan melawan kuman-kuman penyakit.

Madu berperanan sebagai bahan paling mujarab untuk penyakit dalam perut. Ia membersihkan perut, usus, saluran urat dan saluran lain untuk kesihatan. Zat asam manganese dan besi dalam madu membantu pencernaan dan memproses makanan serta menolong masalah sembelit, bengkak dan bernanah dalam perut dan usus dan masalah panas dalam perut.

Manakala zat asam Namlik merupakan zat utama dapat menahan sesuatu dari kebusukan dan kerosakan di samping dapat mematikan kuman dalam perut.

Pakar perubatan Islam banyak menulis mengenai madu.
Antaranya al-Hafiz Ibnu Abi Dunya dalam kitabnya al-Asyrof fi Manazil al- Asyrof menyatakan,"Sesungguhnya madu apabila penggemar meminumnya, ia akan mengawal ma'idah (perut), kemudian ia akan membuang penyakit, menambah kekuatan urat saraf dan kelancaran saluran urat dan darah.

Al-Muwaffaq al-Baghdadi menulis:"Madu berfungsi menyinkir lebihan/bahan yang tidak berguna daripada usus, kuatkan perut, membersih hati, melancarkan air kencing, membersih dada (termasuk paru-paru), berguna bagi orang yang banyak lendir (madu membuang lendir), terhadap tubuh yang ada bahan sejuk dan penyakit batuk yang terjadi dari lendir.

Manakala Dr Rihab 'Ukaiwy menyifatkan madu sebagai pemakanan perlu melahirkan daya kekuatan tubuh dan mental. Pandangan ini turut dikongsi oleh Dr. Muhammad Kamal Abdul Aziz. Madu dijamin oleh Allah sebagaimana dalam firmannya ayat 69 Suroh An-Nahl (lebah)

Keistimewaan lebah ini telah diabadikan oleh Allah di dalam kitab-Nya al-Qur�an. Pengabadian ini dilakukan dengan menamakan satu surah dengan nama lebah, (Al-Nahl). Allah s.w.t. telah berfirman dalam surah ini mengenai lebah dan khasiat yang terdapat dalam madu lebah.


FIRMAN DAN HADIS

Firman ALLAH di dalam AL-QURAN. Surah AN-Nahl ayat 68-69 yang bermaksud:-

�Dan Tuhanmu memberi ilham kepada lebah: "Hendaklah engkau membuat sarangmu pada gunung-ganang, dan pada pokok-pokok kayu, dan pada bangunan-bangunan yang didirikan oleh manusia. �Kemudian makanlah dari segala jenis bunga-bungaan dan buah-buahan (yang engkau sukai) serta turutlah jalan-jalan peraturan Tuhanmu yang diilhamkan dan dimudahkan kepadamu� (dengan itu) akan keluarlah dari dalam badannya minuman (madu) yang berlainan warnanya, yang mengandungi penawar bagi manusia (dari berbagai-bagai penyakit) sesungguhnya pada yang demikian itu ada tanda (yang membuktikan kemurahan Allah) bagi orang-orang yang berfikir.�
DARI HADIS NABI S.A.W, RIWAYAT MUSLIM

Daripada Abu Said Al'Kudri r.a katanya, Seorang lelaki telah datang kepada RASULLULAH S.A.W lalu ia berkata. "Saudaraku sakit perut sehingga dia buang-buang air". Sabda RASULLULAH S.A.W, "Minumlah madu kepadanya" Lalu diminumkan madu kepadanya.

Kemudian dia datang balik kepada RASULLULAH S.A.W, "Telah ku minumkan madu kepadanya tetapi sakitnya bertambah". RASULLULAH S.A.W pula menyuruhnya meminumkan madu supaya berulang tiga kali.

Dia datang lagi untuk kali keempat. Nabi S.A.W terus menyuruhnya supaya meminum madu. Kata orang itu, "Aku telah menyuruhnya meminumnya Ya RASULLULLAH, namun sakitnya bertambah juga. Sabda RASULLULLAH S.A.W, "ALLAH MAHA BESAR, perut saudaramu itulah yang dusta. Lalu diminumnya juga madu, maka sembuhlah saudaranya.

Hadis ini adalah berkaitan dengan khasiat madu lebah. Terdapat banyak hadis yang menceritakan tentang kelebihan madu lebah, di antaranya ialah hadis yang diriwayatkan oleh Ibn Mājjah.

Maksudnya: � Sesiapa yang meminum madu lebah pada waktu pagi, tiga kali setiap bulan, dia tidak akan menghidapi penyakit berbahaya.�

Jenis Madu dan Keistimewaan Lebah

Madu lebah mempunyai berbagai-bagai khasiat. Madu dianggap ibu segala makanan, minuman dan ubatan. Madu yang paling berkualiti ialah madu yang dikeluarkan dalam musim bunga (spring), seterusnya dalam musim panas (summer) dan yang kurang berkualiti adalah madu yang dihasilkan dalam musim sejuk (winter).

Lebah atau nama saintifiknya Apis Mellifera di antara makhluk ciptaan Allah s.w.t. yang dikenali lantaran madu yang dihasilkannya. Tanpa madu, lebah hanya dianggap sebagai binatang biasa, walaupun ia merupakan agen pendebungaan yang penting.

Masyarakat lebah amat dikenali sebagai satu kelompok masyarakat yang berdisiplin, komited dan rajin bekerja. Hasil dari kerajinan dan ketekunan makhluk Allah ini maka terhasillah madu yang mempunyai 1001 khasiat yang secara tidak langsung memberi sumbangan yang besar bagi kesejahteraan kehidupan manusia.



Fakta Saintifik: Khasiat Madu Lebah

Madu lebah mengandungi gula asli glukosa dan fraktosa yang mudah dihadam. Apabila ia dicampur dengan sedikit air, ia menyerap masuk ke dalam darah dalam masa tujuh minit dan dapat dimanfaatkan sepenuhnya oleh otak.

Madu lebah juga mengandungi vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 dan C di samping pelbagai zat logam seperti magnesium, potassium, kalsium, sodium, klorin, belerang dan zat besi.

Ahli-ahli sains daripada pelbagai negara termasuk Amerika mengesahkan berkenaan khasiat madu lebah di World Apiculture Conference yang diadakan pada 20 hingga 26 September 1993 di China. Seorang doktor dari Romania membentangkan pengalamannya menggunakan madu lebah bagi merawat 2094 pesakit-pesakit katarak mata atau cataract dan mendapati 2002 daripada mereka sembuh sepenuhnya.

Mengikut Dr. Peter Molan, seorang pakar biokimia dari unit Kajian Madu Lebah di Universiti Waikato, New Zealand, di antara kelebihan madu lebah adalah pHnya berada pada tahap yang menghalang pembiakan bakteria. Apabila ia dicairkan, salah satu enzim yang terdapat di dalamnya merangsang pengeluaran bahan antibakteria yang dikenali sebagai hydrogen peroxide. Kuasa antibakteria yang terdapat dalam madu lebah membolehkannya membunuh sejenis kuman yang berbahaya, iaitu, staphylococcus aureus.

Antara penemuan saintifik tentang khasiat madu dapat disimpulkan seperti dibawah:

1. Kaya bahan anti oksidan yang menghalang free radicals daripada bertindak ke atas sel-sel yang boleh menyebabkan kanser (BBC, University of Zagreb, Croatia)

2. Antara sumber tenaga asli bagi tubuh yang terbaik e.g. Meningkatkan kekuatan otot dan stamina badan (British Honey Importers and Packers Association)

3. Pembunuh kuman daripada jenis bacteria, fungus dan protozoa (University of Waikato, New Zealand)

4. Mampu menyembuh ulser dan luka dengan lebih cepat dan berkesan (University of Waikato, New Zealand)

5. Boleh merawat penyakit mata (Fotidar MR, Fotidar SN)

6. Mampu menjadi antibiotic yang lebih berkesan (University of Cardiff, Wales).
Minumlah madu lebah!

Banyak lagi khasiat yang terdapat dalam madu lebah yang telah terbukti dengan kajian para doktor dan pakar seluruh dunia sehingga ia digelar sebagai minuman dari segala minuman dan ubat dari segala ubat. Di antara khasiat lain bagi madu lebah ialah:

digunakan sebagai ubat sakit perut
menghilangkan ketagihan dadah
menghilangkan kahak
memutih dan menguatkan gigi
menghilangkan kesan terbakar pada kulit
menguatkan badan, bagi yang berumur
Perihal madu lebah bukan sahaja terdapat dalam Quran dan Hadis, tetapi juga terdapat di dalam Bible.

Kesimpulannya, Al Quran adalah suatu mukjizat yang akan terus membongkar hakikat di sebalik pencipta di alam cakerawala ini. Ini juga menyingkap betapa segala penciptaan yang wujud di bumi ini diciptakan oleh ALLAH dengan fungsinya yang tersendiri. Tiada satupun objek atau kejadian yang dicipta secara sia-sia.

Walaubagaimanapun hanya orang-orang yang berfikir dapat memahami rahsia di sebalik penciptaan yang pelbagai sebagaimana yang difirmankan oleh Allah:

“Dan mereka-mereka (yang beriman) sentiasa mengingati Allah sama ada dalam keadaan berdiri, duduk atau berbaring. Dan mereka yang berfikir tentang segala penciptaaNya sama ada di langit-langit ataupun di bumi. Mereka berdoa: Wahai Tuhan kami, tidak satupun (objek & kejadian di langit dan Di bumi) yang Engkau ciptakan secara sia-sia. Maha Suci Engkau, selamatkan kami dari NERAKA”. (Surah Ali Imran: 191).

Perhatian:
Jangan disimpan dalam peti sejuk.
Elakkan dari memakan madu bersama tembikai.
Elakkan dari terkena pancaran cahaya matahari.
Jauhkan dari litar elektrik.
Jangan guna madu dengan unsur logam
Jangan gunakan madu untuk rawatan penyakit kronik tanpa nasihat pakar.

Benefits of Honey.


The honey bee exhibits a combination of individual traits and social co-operation which is unparalleled in the animal kingdom. A glimpse into the nest makes it apparent why honey bees have fascinated us from the earliest days of scientific observations. The infrastructure of the nest, the perfectly uniform and functional comb, is composed of beeswax and is constructed into a repeating series of almost perfect hexagonal cells.

At the individual level, honey bees have not one but three types of colony members: queens, drones and workers, each with their own specialisations and place in honey bee society. The queen reigns over the nest, surrounded by attendants and fed the rich food she requires to perform her few but crucial tasks in the colony. The queen produces powerful pheromones, chemical signals to recipient workers which control many of their behaviours and provide part of the 'social glue' which holds honey bee life together. A highly organised social structure exists within the colony and elaborate 'dances' are used to communicate the location of food sources.

The products of the hive are important to the modern agricultural system. Not only do honey bees provide us with honey, wax, propolis, royal jelly and pollen but they also pollinate a good portion of our crops, including such diverse agricultural plants as fruit trees, oilseeds, small berries and forage crops.

Honey is a remarkable viscous liquid, prepared by the bees from the nectars of various plants. It has occupied a prominent place in traditional medicines throughout world history. The ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, Chinese, Greeks and Romans employed honey for wounds and diseases of the gut. When the Children of Israel were in Egypt or journeying through the desert, their promised goal was a 'land flowing with milk and honey'.

Both the holy Qur'an and Hadith refer to honey as a healer of disease.

'And thy Lord taught the bee to build its cells in hills, on trees and in (men's) habitations..... there issues from within their bodies a drink of varying colours, wherein is healing for mankind. Verily in this is a Sign for those who give thought'. 
(Translation of Quran 16:68-69)

In addition, the Prophet (PBUH) said:

'Honey is a remedy for every illness and the Qur'an is a remedy for all illness of the mind, therefore I recommend to you both remedies, the Qur'an and honey.'
(Bukhari)

The reader may be surprised to learn that the above quotation from the Qur'an is mentioned in a well known encyclopedia on honey (reference 3).

In recent years, scientific support is beginning to emerge confirming the beneficial effects of honey on certain medical and surgical conditions. These effects may be summarised as follows:

Antibacterial and antifungal properties

These properties of honey are well established. Undiluted honey inhibits the growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, certain gut pathogens and fungi such as Candida albicans. At a concentration of 30-50%, honey has been shown to be superior to certain conventional antibiotics in treating urinary tract infections. The exact mechanism of the anti-microbial effect of honey remains obscure. Low pH, osmotic disruption of pathogens and the
presence of bactericidal substances, collectively called inhibine may all play a part.

Anti-diarrhoeal properties

At a concentration of 40%, honey has a bactericidal effect on various gut bacteria known to cause diarrhoea and dysentery such as Salmonella, Shigella, enteropathogenic E. coli and Vibrio cholera. In one study, honey given with oral rehydration fluid was shown to reduce the duration of bacterial diarrhoea in infants and children.

Wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties

Honey is of value in treating burns, infected surgical wounds and decubitus ulcers. Honey is very viscous, enabling it to absorb water from surrounding inflamed tissue. For example, a study in West Africa showed that skin grafting, surgical debridement and even amputation were avoided when local application of honey to wound promoted healing, whereas conventional treatment failed.

In another study, wound healing was accelerated by application of honey in women who had undergone radical vulvectomy for vulval cancer. Also, it has been suggested that honey may be useful in the treatment of chronic, foul smelling ulcers seen in leprosy.

Anti-tussive and expectorant properties

These anti-cough properties of honey are related to its capacity to dilute bronchial secretions and improve the function of the bronchial epithelium.

Nutritional properties

Uncontaminated honey is a healthy, easily digestible, natural and energy rich food. It contains carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, enzymes and vitamins. One tablespoon of honey provides 60 calories and contains 11g of carbohydrates, 1mg of calcium, 0.2mg of iron, 0.lmg of vitamin B and 1mg of vitamin C.

Honey is widely available in most communities but its medical potential remains grossly underutilised. Its mode of action remains incompletely understood and the healing properties of honey in other clinical and laboratory situations requires further evaluation. The miraculous beneficial properties of honey, so beautifully ex-pressed in the holy Qur'an and Sunnah 14 centuries ago expose the reluctance of modern science to accept and exploit this 'traditional remedy'.

Islamic Medicine: 1000 years ahead of its times.


Within a century after the death of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) the Muslims not only conquered new lands, but also became scientific innovators with originality and productivity. They hit the source ball of knowledge over the fence to Europe. By the ninth century, Islamic medical practice had advanced from talisman and theology to hospitals with wards, doctors who had to pass tests, and the use of technical terminology. The then Baghdad General Hospital incorporated innovations which sound amazingly modern. The fountains cooled the air near the wards of those afflicted with fever; the insane were treated with gentleness; and at night the pain of the restless was soothed by soft music and storytelling. The prince and pauper received identical attention; the destitute upon discharge received five gold pieces to sustain them during convalescence. While Paris and London were places of mud streets and hovels, Baghdad, Cairo and Cardboard had hospitals open to both male and female patients; staffed by attendants of both sexes. These medical centers contained libraries pharmacies, the system of interns, externs, and nurses. There were mobile clinics to reach the totally disabled, the disadvantaged and those in remote areas. There were regulations to maintain quality control on drugs. Pharmacists became licensed professionals and were pledged to follow the physician's prescriptions. Legal measures were taken to prevent doctors from owning or holding stock. in a pharmacy. The extent to which Islamic medicine advanced in the fields of medical education, hospitals, bacteriology, medicine, anesthesia, surgery, pharmacy, ophthalmology, psychotherapy and psychosomatic diseases are presented briefly.

INTRODUCTION

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who is ranked number one by Michael Hart, a Jewish scholar, in his book The 100: The Most Influential Persons in History, was able to unite the Arab tribes who had been tom by revenge, rivalry, and internal fights, and produced a strong nation acquired and ruled simultaneously, the two known empires at that time, namely the Persian and Byzantine Empires. The Islamic Empire extended from the Atlantic Ocean on the West to the borders of China on the East. Only 80 years after the death of their Prophet, the Muslims crossed to Europe to rule Spain for more than 700 years. The Muslims preserved the cultures of the conquered lands. However when the Islamic Empire became weak, most of the Islamic contributions in an and science were destroyed. The Mongols bunt Baghdad (1258 A.D.) out of barbarism, and the Spaniards demolished most of the Islamic heritage in Spain out of hatred.

The Islamic Empire for more than 1000 years remained the most advanced and civilized nation in the world. This is because Islam stressed the importance and respect of learning, forbade destruction, developed in Muslims the respect for authority and discipline, and tolerance for other religions. The Muslims recognized excellence and hungering intellectually, were avid for the wisdom of the world of Galen, Hippocrates, Rufus of Ephesus, Oribasius, Discorides and Paul of Aegina. By the tenth century their zeal and enthusiasm for learning resulted in all essential Greek medical writings being translated into Arabic in Damascus, Cairo, and Baghdad. Arabic became the International Language of learning and diplomacy. The center of scientific knowledge and activity shifted eastward, and Baghdad emerged as the capital of the scientific world. The Muslims became scientific innovators with originality and productivity. Islamic medicine is one of the most famous and best known facets of Islamic civilization, and in which the Muslims most excelled. The Muslims were the great torchbearers of international scientific research. They hit the source ball of knowledge over the fence to Europe. In the words of Campbell' "The European medical system is Arabian not only in origin but also in its structure. The Arabs are the intellectual forebears of the Europeans."

The aim of this paper is to prove that the Islamic Medicine was 1000 years ahead of its times. The paper covers areas such as medical education, hospitals, bacteriology, medicine, anesthesia, surgery, ophthalmology, pharmacy, and psychotherapy.

MEDICAL EDUCATION

In 636 A.D., the Persian City of Jundi-Shapur, which originally meant beautiful garden, was conquered by the Muslims with its great university and hospital intact. Later the Islamic medical schools developed on the Jundi-Shapur pattern. Medical education was serious and systematic. Lectures and clinical sessions included in teaching were based on the apprentice system. The advice given by Ali ibnul-Abbas (Haly Abbas: -994 -A.D.) to medical students is as timely today as it was then'. "And of those things which were incumbent on the student of this art (medicine) are that he should constantly attend the hospitals and sick houses; pay unremitting attention to the conditions and circumstances of their intimates, in company with the most astute professors of medicine, and inquire frequently as to the state of the patients and symptoms apparent in them, bearing in mind what he has read about these variations, and what they indicate of good or evil."

Razi (Rhazes: 841-926 A.D.) advised the medical students while they were seeing a patient to bear in mind the classic symptoms of a disease as given in text books and compare them with what they found (6).

The ablest physicians such as Razi (Al-Rhazes), Ibn-Sina (Avicenna: 980-1037 A.D.) and Ibn Zuhr (Avenzoar: 116 A.D.) performed the duties of both hospital directors and deans of medical schools at the same time. They studied patients and prepared them for student presentation. Clinical reports of cases were written and preserved for teaching'. Registers were maintained.

Training in Basic Sciences

Only Jundi-Shapur or Baghdad had separate schools for studying basic sciences. Candidates for medical study received basic preparation from private tutors through private lectures and self study. In Baghdad anatomy was taught by dissecting the apes, skeletal studies, and didactics. Other medical schools taught anatomy through lectures and illustrations. Alchemy was once of the prerequisites for admission to medical school. The study of medicinal herbs and pharmacognosy rounded out the basic training. A number of hospitals maintained barbel gardens as a source of drugs for the patients and a means of instruction for the students.

Once the basic training was completed the candidate was admitted as an apprentice to a hospital where, at the beginning, he was assigned in a large group to a young physician for indoctrination, preliminary lectures, and familiarization with library procedures and uses. During this pre-clinical period, most of the lectures were on pharmacology and toxicology and the use of antidotes.

Clinical training: The next step was to give the student full clinical training. During this period students were assigned in small groups to famous physicians and experienced instructors, for ward rounds, discussions, lectures, and reviews. Early in this period therapeutics and pathology were taught. There was a strong emphasis on clinical instruction and some Muslim physicians contributed brilliant observations that have stood the test of time. As the students progressed in their studies they were exposed more and more to the subjects of diagnosis and judgment. Clinical observation and physical examination were stressed. Students (clinical clerks) were asked to examine a patient and make a diagnosis of the ailment. Only after an had failed would the professor make the diagnosis himself. While performing physical examination, the students were asked to examine and report six major factors: the patients' actions, excreta, the nature and location of pain, and swelling and effuvia of the body. Also noted was color and feel of the skin- whether hot, cool, moist, dry, flabby. Yellowness in the whites of the eye (jaundice) and whether or not the patient could bend his back (lung disease) was also considered important (8).

After a period of ward instructions, students, were assigned to outpatient areas. After examining the patients they reported their findings to the instructors. After discussion, treatment was decided on and prescribed. Patients who were too ill were admitted as inpatients. The keeping of records for every patient was the responsibility of the students.

Curriculum: There was a difference in the clinical curriculum of different medical schools in their courses; however the mainstay was usually internal medicine. Emphasis was placed on clarity and brevity in describing a disease and the separation of each entity. Until the time of Ibn Sina the description of meningitis was confused with acute infection accompanied by delirium. Ibn Sina described the symptoms of meningitis with such clarity and brevity that there is very little that can be added after I 000 yearS6. Surgery was also included in the curriculum. After completing courses, some students specialized under famous specialists. Some others specialized while in clinical training. According to Elgood9 many surgical procedures such as amputation, excision of varicose veins and hemorrhoids were required knowledge. Orthopedics was widely taught, and the use of plaster of Paris for casts after reduction of fractures was routinely shown to students. This method of treating fractures was rediscovered in the West in 1852. Although ophthalmology was practiced widely, it was not taught regularly in medical schools. Apprenticeship to an eye doctor was the preferred way of specializing in ophthalmology. Surgical treatment of cataract was very common. Obstetrics was left to midwives. Medical practitioners consulted among themselves and with specialists. Ibn Sina and Hazi both widely practiced and taught psychotherapy. After completing the training, the medical graduate was not ready to enter practice, until he passed the licensure examination. It is important to note that there existed a Scientific Association which had been formed in the hospital of Mayyafariqin to discuss the conditions and diseases of the patients.

Licensing of Physicians: In Baghdad in 931 A.D. Caliph Al-Muqtadir learned that a patient had died as the result of a physician's error. There upon he ordered his chief physician, Sinan-ibn Thabit bin Qurrah to examine all those who practiced the art of healing. In the first year of the decree more than 860 were examined in Baghdad alone. From that time on, licensing examinations were required and administered in various places. Licensing Boards were set up under a government official called Muhtasib or inspector general . The Muhtasib also inspected weights and measures of traders and pharmacists. Pharmacists were employed as inspectors to inspect drugs and maintain quality control of drugs sold in a pharmacy or apothecary. What the present Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is doing in America today was done in Islamic medicine I 000 years ago. The chief physician gave oral and practical examinations, and if the young physician was successful, the Muhtasib administered the Hippocratic oath and issued a license. After 1000 years licensing of physicians has been implemented in the West, particularly in America by the State Licensing Board in Medicine. For specialists we have American Board of Medical Specialties such as in Medicine, Surgery, Radiology, etc. European medical schools followed the pattern set by the Islamic medical schools and even in the early nineteenth century, students at the Sorbonne could not graduate without reading Ibn Sina's Qanun (Cannon). According to Razi a physician had to satisfy two condition for selection: firs0y, he was to be fully conversant with the new and the old medical literature and secondly, he must have worked in a hospital as house physician.

HOSPITALS

The development of efficient hospitals was an outstanding contribution of Islamic medicine (7). Hospitals served all citizens free without any regard to their color, religion, sex, age or social status. The hospitals were run by government and the directors of hospitals were physicians.

Hospitals had separate wards for male patients and female patients. Each ward was furnished with a nursing staff and porters of the sex of the patients to be treated therein. Different diseases such as fever, wounds, infections, mania, eye conditions, cold diseases, diarrhea, and female disorders were allocated different wards. Convalescents had separate sections within them. Hospitals provided patients with unlimited water supply and with bathing facilities. Only qualified and licensed physicians were allowed by law to practice medicine. The hospitals were teaching hospitals educating medical students. They had housing for students and house-staff. They contained pharmacies dispensing free drugs to patients. Hospitals had their own conference room and expensive libraries containing the most up-to-date books. According to Haddad, the library of the Tulum Hospital which was founded in Cairo in 872 A.D. (I 100 years ago) had 100,000 books. Universities, cities and hospitals acquired large libraries (Mustansiriyya University in Baghdad contained 80,000 volumes; the library of Cordova 600,000 volumes; that of Cairo 2,000,000 and that of Tripoli 3,000,000 books), physicians had their own extensive personal book collections, at a time when printing was unknown and book editing was done by skilled and specialized scribes putting in long hours of manual labour.

For the first time in history, these hospitals kept records of patients and their medical care.

From the point of view of treatment the hospital was divided into an out- patient department and an inpatient department. The system of the in-patient department differed only slightly from that of today. At Tulun hospital, on admission the patients were given special apparel while their clothes, money, and valuables were stored until the time of their discharge. On discharge, each patient - received five gold pieces to support himself until he could return to work.

The hospital and medical school at Damascus had elegant rooms and an extensive library. Healthy people are said to have feigned illness in order to enjoy its cuisine. There was a separate hospital in Damascus for lepers, while, in Europe, even six centuries later, condemned lepers were burned to death by royal decree.

The Qayrawan Hospital (built in 830 A.D. in Tunisia) was characterized by spacious separate wards, waiting rooms for visitors and patients, and female nurses from Sudan, an event representing the first use of nursing in Arabic history. The hospital also provided facilities for performing prayers.

The Al-Adudi hospital (built in 981 A.D. in Baghdad) was furnished with die best equipment and supplies known at the time. It had interns, residents, and 24 consultants attending its professional activities, An Abbasid minister, Ali ibn Isa, requested the court physician, Sinan ibn Thabit, to organize regular visiting of prisons by medical officers (14). At a time when paris and London were places of mud streets and hovels, Baghdad, Cairo, and Cordova had hospitals which incorporated innovations which sound amazingly modern. It was chiefly in the humaneness of patient care, however, that the hospitals of Islam excelled. Near the wards of those afflicted with fever, fountains cooled the air; the insane were treated with gentleness; and at night music and storytelling soothed the patients.

The Bimaristans (hospitals) were of two types - the fixed and the mobile. The mobile hospitals were transported upon beasts of burden and were erected from time to time as required. The physicians in the mobile clinics were of the same standing as those who served the fixed hospitals. Similar moving hospitals accompanied the armies in the field. The field hospitals were well equipped with medicaments, instruments, tents and a staff of doctors, nurses, and orderlies. The traveling clinics served the totally disabled, the disadvantaged and those in remote areas. These hospitals were also used by prisoners, and by the general public, particularly in times of epidemics.

BACTERIOLOGY

Al-Razi was asked to choose a site for a new hospital when he came to Baghdad. First he deduced which was the most hygienic area by observing where the fresh pieces of meat he had hung in various parts of the city decomposed least quickly.

Ibn Sina stated explicitly that the bodily secretion is contaminated by foul foreign earthly body before getting the infection. Ibn Khatima stated that man is surrounded by minute bodies which enter the human system and cause disease.

In the middle of the fourteenth century "black death" was ravaging Europe and before which Christians stood helpless, considering it an act of God.

At that time Ibn al Khatib of Granada composed a treatise in the defense of the theory of infection in the following way: To those who say, "How can we admit the possibility of infection while the religious law denies it?" We reply that the existence of contagion is established by experience, investigation, the evidence of the senses and trustworthy reports. These facts constitute a sound argument. The fact of infection becomes clear to the investigator who notices how he who establishes contact with the afflicted gets the disease, whereas he who is not in contact remains safe, and how transmission is effected through garments, vessels and earrings.

Al-Razi wrote the first medical description of smallpox and measles - two important infectious diseases. He described the clinical difference between the two diseases so vividly that nothing since has been added. Ibn Sina suggested the communicable nature of tuberculosis. He is said to have been the first to describe the preparation and properties of sulphuric acid and alcohol. His recommendation of wine as the best dressing for wounds was very popular in medieval practice. However Razi was the first to use silk sutures and alcohol for hemostatis. He was the first to use alcohol as an antiseptic.

ANESTHESIA

Ibn Sina originated the idea of the use of oral anesthetics. He recognized opium as the most powerful mukhadir (an intoxicant or drug). Less powerful anesthetics known were mandragora, poppy, hemlock, hyoscyamus, deadly nightshade (belladonna), lettuce seed, and snow or ice cold water. The Arabs invented the soporific sponge which was the precursor of modem anesthesia. It was a sponge soaked with aromatics and narcotics and held to the patient's nostrils.

The use of anesthesia was one of the reasons for the rise of surgery in the Islamic world to the level of an honourable speciality, while in Europe, surgery was belittled and practiced by barbers and quacks. The Council of Tours in 1163 A.D. declared Surgery is to be abandoned by the schools of medicine and by all decent physicians." Burton stated that "anesthetics have been used in surgery throughout the East for centuries before ether and chloroform became the fashion in civilized West."

SURGERY

Al-Razi is attributed to be the first to use the seton in surgery and animal gut for sutures.

Abu al-Qasim Khalaf Ibn Abbas Al-Zahrawi (930-1013 A.D.) known to the West as Abulcasis, Bucasis or Alzahravius is considered to be the most famous surgeon in Islamic medicine. In his book Al-Tasrif, he described hemophilia for the first time in medical history. The book contains the description and illustration of about 200 surgical instruments many of which were devised by Zahrawi himself. In it Zahrawi stresses the importance of the study of Anatomy as a fundamental prerequisite to surgery. He advocates the re implantation of a fallen tooth and the use of dental prosthesis carved from cow's bone, an improvement over the wooden dentures worn by the first President of America George Washington seven centuries later. Zahrawi appears to be the first surgeon in history to use cotton (Arabic word) in surgical dressings in the control of hemorrhage, as padding in the splinting of fractures, as a vaginal padding in fractures of the pubis and in dentistry. He introduced the method for the removal of kidney stones by cutting into the urinary bladder. He was the first to teach the lithotomy position for vaginal operations. He described tracheotomy, distinguished between goiter and cancer of the thyroid, and explained his invention of a cauterizing iron which he also used to control bleeding. His description of varicose veins stripping, even after ten centuries, is almost like modern surgery. In orthopedic surgery he introduced what is called today Kocher's method of reduction of shoulder dislocation and patelectomy, 1,000 years before Brooke reintroduced it in 1937.

Ibn Sina's description of the surgical treatment of cancer holds true even today after 1,000 years. He says the excision must be wide and bold; all veins running to the tumor must be included in the amputation. Even if this is not sufficient, then the area affected should be cauterized.

The surgeons of Islam practiced three types of surgery: vascular, general, and orthopedic, Ophthalmic surgery was a speciality which was quite distinct both from medicine and surgery. They freely opened the abdomen and drained the peritoneal cavity in the approved modern style. To an unnamed surgeon of Shiraz is attributed the first colostomy operation. Liver abscesses were treated by puncture and exploration.

Surgeons all over the world practice today unknowingly several surgical procedures that Zahrawi introduced 1,000 years ago .

MEDICINE

The most brilliant contribution was made by Al-Razi who differentiated between smallpox and measles, two diseases that were hitherto thought to be one single disease. He is credited with many contributions, which include being the first to describe true distillation, glass retorts and luting, corrosive sublimate, arsenic, copper sulfate, iron sulphate, saltpeter, and borax in the treatment of disease . He introduced mercury compounds as purgatives (after testing them on monkeys); mercurial ointments and lead ointment." His interest in urology focused on problems involving urination, venereal disease, renal abscess, and renal and vesical calculi. He described hay-fever or allergic rhinitis.

Some of the Arab contributions include the discovery of itch mite of scabies (Ibn Zuhr), anthrax, ankylostoma and the guinea worm by Ibn Sina and sleeping sickness by Qalqashandy. They described abscess of the mediastinum. They understood tuberculosis and pericarditis.

Al Ash'ath demonstrated gastric physiology by pouring water into the mouth of an anesthetized lion and showed the distensibility and movements of the stomach, preceding Beaumont by about 1,000 years" Abu Shal al- Masihi explained that the absorption of food takes place more through the intestines than the stomach. Ibn Zuhr introduced artificial feeding either by gastric tube or by nutrient enema. Using the stomach tube the Arab physicians performed gastric lavage in case of poisoning. Ibn Al-Nafis was the first to discover pulmonary circulation.

Ibn Sina in his masterpiece Al-Quanun (Canon), containing over a million words, described complete studies of physiology, patlhology and hygiene. He specifically discoursed upon breast cancer, poisons, diseases of the skin, rabies, insomnia, childbirth and the use of obstetrical forceps, meningitis, amnesia, stomach ulcers, tuberculosis as a contagious disease, facial tics, phlebotomy, tumors, kidney diseases and geriatric care. He defined love as a mental disease.

OPHTHALMOLOGY

The doctors of Islam exhibited a high degree of proficiency and certainly were foremost in the treatment of eye diseases. Words such as retina and cataract are of Arabic origin. In ophthalmology and optics lbn al Haytham (965-1039 A.D.) known to the West as Alhazen wrote the Optical Thesaurus from which such worthies as Roger Bacon, Leonardo da Vinci and Johannes Kepler drew theories for their own writings. In his Thesaurus he showed that light falls on the retina in the same manner as it falls on a surface in a darkened room through a small aperture, thus conclusively proving that vision happens when light rays pass from objects towards the eye and not from the eye towards the objects as thought by the Greeks. He presents experiments for testing the angles of incidence and reflection, and a theoretical proposal for magnifying lens (made in Italy three centuries later). He also taught that the image made on the retina is conveyed along the optic nerve to the brain. Razi was the first to recognize the reaction of the pupil to light and Ibn Sina was the first to describe the exact number of extrinsic muscles of the eyeball, namely six. The greatest contribution of Islamic medicine in practical ophthalmology was in the matter of cataract. The most significant development in the extraction of cataract was developed by Ammar bin Ali of Mosul, who introduced a hollow metallic needle through the sclerotic and extracted the lens by suction. Europe rediscovered this in the nineteenth century.

PHARMACOLOGY

Pharmacology took roots in Islam during the 9th century. Yuhanna bin Masawayh (777-857 A.D.) started scientific and systematic applications of therapeutics at the Abbasids capital. His students Hunayn bin Ishaq al-lbadi (809-874 A.D.) and his associates established solid foundations of Arabic medicine and therapeutics in the ninth century. In his book al-Masail Hunayn outlined methods for confirming the pharmacological effectiveness of drugs by experimenting with them on humans. He also explained the importance of prognosis and diagnosis of diseases for better and more effective treatment.

Pharmacy became an independent and separate profession from medicine and alchemy. With the wild sprouting of apothecary shops, regulations became necessary and imposed to maintain quality control." The Arabian apothecary shops were regularly inspected by a syndic (Muhtasib) who threatened the merchants with humiliating corporal punishments if they adulterated drugs." As early as the days of al-Mamun and al-Mutasim pharmacists had to pass examinations to become licensed professionals and were pledged to follow the physician's prescriptions. Also by this decree, restrictive measures were legally placed upon doctors, preventing them from owning or holding stock in a pharmacy.

Methods of extracting and preparing medicines were brought to a high art, and their techniques of distillation, crystallization, solution, sublimation, reduction and calcination became the essential processes of pharmacy and chemistry. With the help of these techniques, the Saydalanis (pharmacists) introduced new drugs such as camphor, senna, sandalwood, rhubarb, musk, myrrh, cassia, tamarind, nutmeg, alum, aloes, cloves, coconut, nuxvomica, cubebs, aconite, ambergris and mercury. The important role of the Muslims in developing modern pharmacy and chemistry is memorialized in the significant number of current pharmaceutical and chemical terms derived from Arabic: drug, alkali, alcohol, aldehydes, alembic, and elixir among others, not to mention syrups and juleps. They invented flavorings extracts made of rose water, orange blossom water, orange and lemon peel, tragacanth and other attractive ingredients. Space does not permit me to list the contributions to pharmacology and therapeutics, made by Razi, Zahrawi, Biruni, Ibn Butlan, and Tamimi.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

From freckle lotion to psychotherapy- such was the range of treatment practiced by the physicians of Islam. Though freckles continue to sprinkle the skin of 20th century man, in the realm of psychosomatic disorders both al-Razi and Ibn Sina achieved dramatic results, antedating Freud and Jung by a thousand years. When Razi was appointed physician-in-chief to the Baghdad Hospital, he made it the, first hospital to have a ward exclusively devoted to the mentally ill."

Razi combined psychological methods and physiological explanations, and he used psychotherapy in a dynamic fashion, Razi was once called in to treat a famous caliph who had severe arthritis. He advised a hot bath, and while the caliph was bathing, Razi threatened him with a knife, proclaiming he was going to kill him. This deliberate provocation increased the natural caloric which thus gained sufficient strength to dissolve the already softened humours, as a result the caliph got up from is knees in the bath and ran after Razi. One woman who suffered from such severe cramps in her joints that she was unable to rise was cured by a physician who lifted her skirt, thus putting her to shame. "A flush of heat was produced within her which dissolved the rheumatic humour."

The Arabs brought a refreshing spirit of dispassionate clarity into psychiatry. They were free from the demonological theories which swept over the Christian world and were therefore able to make clear cut clinical observations on the mentally ill.

Najab ud din Muhammad'", a contemporary of Razi, left many excellent descriptions of various mental diseases. His carefully compiled observation on actual patients made up the most complete classification of mental diseases theretofore known." Najab described agitated depression, obsessional types of neurosis, Nafkhae Malikholia (combined priapism and sexual impotence). Kutrib (a form of persecutory psychosis), Dual-Kulb (a form of mania) .

Ibn Sina recognized 'physiological psychology' in treating illnesses involving emotions. From the clinical perspective Ibn Sina developed a system for associating changes in the pulse rate with inner feelings which has been viewed as anticipating the word association test of Jung. He is said to have treated a terribly ill patient by feeling the patient's pulse and reciting aloud to him the names of provinces, districts, towns, streets, and people. By noticing how the patient's pulse quickened when names were mentioned Ibn Sina deduced that the patient was in love with a girl whose home Ibn Sina was able to locate by the digital examination. The man took Ibn Sina's advice , married the girl , and recovered from his illness.

It is not surprising to know that at Fez, Morocco, an asylum for the mentally ill had been built early in the 8th century, and insane, asylums were built by the Arabs also in Baghdad in 705 A.D., in Cairo in 800 A.D., and in Damascus and Aleppo in 1270 A.D. In addition to baths, drugs, kind and benevolent treatment given to the mentally ill, musico-therapy and occupational therapy were also employed. These therapies were highly developed. Special choirs and live music bands were brought daily to entertain the patients by providing singing and musical performances and comic performers as well.

CONCLUSION

1,000 years ago Islamic medicine was the most advanced in the world at that time. Even after ten centuries, the achievements of Islamic medicine look amazingly modern. 1,000 years ago the Muslims were the great torchbearers of international scientific research. Every student and professional from each country outside the Islamic Empire, aspired, yearned, a dreamed to go to the Islamic universities to learn, to work, to live and to lead a comfortable life in an affluent and most advanced and civilized society. Today, in this twentieth century, the United States of America has achieved such a position. The pendulum can swing back. Fortunately Allah has given a bounty to many Islamic countries - an income over 100 billion dollars per year. Hence Islamic countries have the opportunity and resources to make Islamic science and medicine number one in the world, once again.
