Medical Benefits of Prostration.

Sajdah (prostration) is a unique position or stance in the regular prayers, which a Muslim is supposed to offer at least five times a day. Although the basic purpose of obligatory prayers is not to provide exercise, yet it is being increasingly recognized that it has plenty of medical advantages for the human body.

The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ), mentioned in a Hadeeth (narration) collected by Ibn Majah  may  Allah  have  mercy  upon  him that prayer is a cure for many diseases. A person who offers his prayers regularly, especially in the mosque, is protected from many ailments  some of which he many not even know. The position of Sajdah in which the forehead touches the earth is exclusively associated with the Muslim form of prayer. It is the climax of a Muslim's prayer and as mentioned in a Hadeeth as the position in which a Muslim is nearest to Allah The Almighty.

Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported in Saheeh Bukhari that the Messenger of Allah,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ), said: "The nearest a servant comes to his Lord is when he is prostrating himself, so make supplication (in this state)."

Aa`ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, narrates that the Prophet ,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ), used to prolong the prostration to such an extent that one could recite fifty verses (of the Quran) before he lifted his head. (Al-Bukhari).
In another Hadeeth narrated by Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, the Prophet ,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ), advised Muslims to perform Ruku' (bowing) and Sajdah properly.

In another Hadeeth he advised to perform Sajdah and bowing calmly and to get up only when the body has come to ease.
In the supplication for the victory, he also performed a long bowing (Ruku') and Sajdah in the special prayers at the time of eclipse. Hence, the first positive effect upon a person who prostrates or does Sajdah is that he comes nearest to Allah The Almighty and hence in that condition he can supplicate. This is a great psychological advantage and it gives relief to the person concerned, as life is full of worries and in this position he gets at least a transient refuge and succor.

Effect on muscles

When a person goes to the position of prostration Sajdah his whole body is in an active motion. In this position, the Musalli (the person who offers prayer) rests his forehead on the ground while his hands are placed at the sides. This brings most of the body muscles, if not all, in active motion and gives them some exercise.

The hands are then stretched out in a manner such that the forearm as well as arm muscles bear the weight in the Sajdah position. This is good exercise for the muscles of the upper limbs. The Prophet ,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ), in a Hadeeth advised people not to put the forearms flatly on the ground but to keep them elevated above the ground. From the physical point of view, this is better for the forearm and arm muscles.

Effect on blood circulation

Sajdah is a unique position as this is the only position in which brain (or head) becomes lower than the heart, and hence the blood gushes towards the brain with full force, whereas in all other positions (even when lying down) the brain is above the heart when it has to work against gravity to send blood to the brain.

In the position of Sajdah, due to the increased blood supply, the brain receives more nourishment, which has a good effect upon memory, vision, hearing, concentration, psyche and all other cognitive abilities. People who offer their prayers regularly may have stronger willpower and can cope with the difficulties of life in much better ways. They are less vulnerable to headaches, psychological problems and other disorders of the cognitive functions.

Effect on neck muscles

In the unique position of Sajdah the neck muscles get the best exercise. They have to bear the load when the forehead touches the ground; hence, the neck muscles become stronger. One can note the tense pressure at the neck muscles in the position of Sajdah, specially the active motion of the neck and the facial muscles when the head is lifted. (e.g. one inch above the ground) and it will be observed that they are in a very active state.

Stronger cervical muscles mean the cervical vertebra will be better protected. The strength of the cervical muscles is important, as the head rests upon cervical vertebra, supported by cervical musculature.

In fact, the head performs rotator movements over the cervical vertebra. In case of an accident, examination of the cervical (neck) region is especially important to physicians.

It is uncommon that a person who offers his prayers regularly will get common neck ailments like myalgias or cervical spondylosis, because the neck muscles in particular become very strong due to the 34 Sajdahs offered daily in five prayers.

Effect on internal organs and muscles

The position of the Sajdah is also said to be a good treatment for the retroversion of the uterus, a disease of women.
Most of us do not know that the position of Sajdah is an excellent exercise for men. While rising from Sajdah the perineal muscles pull the trunk back to sitting position and they contract actively. Similarly, while getting up from Sajdah, the perenial muscles are again actively mobilised and this gives strengthens the muscles associated with the male reproductive system.
The unique position of Sajdah also has positive effects upon the back muscles as while going into Sajdah and getting up from it the back muscle contract actively and they become stronger. Probably, it is because of this reason that a person who is regular in prayers seldom gets a backache.

After performing Sajdah either the Musalli stands up or he sits to pray. In this position the person sits calmly while his hands rest at his thighs which are folded backwards. This has a soothing effect upon one's health and mental condition.
Prophet Muhammad,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ), used to lengthen the position of Ruku' (bending) and Sajdah and advised others to do so, as well. In the light of the above facts it is appropriate to say that from the medical point of view this advice is a golden rule for health.

In conclusion, we should keep in mind that prayer is not meant to be an exercise. However, there are a lot of medical advantages associated with it. Still, the best blessing is the peace of mind, which a person derives by the accomplishment of his duty to Allah The Almighty by fulfilling an obligation.

His Interaction with Inanimate Beings.

The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ), interacted with inanimate beings in many instances. These miracles proved his veracity, and the divine nature of his message. Some of the miracles of the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ), were:

·        Jaabir bin 'Abdullaah may Allah be pleased with him, reported,

“We set out on an expedition along with Allah's Messenger  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) until we dismounted in a spacious valley and Allah's Messenger  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) went to relieve himself. I followed him with a bucket full of water and Allah's Messenger  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) looked about and he found no privacy but two trees at the end of the valley. He  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) went to one of them and took hold of one of its twigs and said: ‘Be thou under my control, by the permission of Allah,”and so it came under his control like a camel who has its nose string in the hand of its rider; then he  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) came to the second tree and took hold of a twig and said: ‘Be thou under my control, with the permission of Allah’ and it came under his control, and when he  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) came in the middle of the two trees, he joined together the two twigs and said : ‘Join with the permission of Allah.’ I (Jaabir) was afraid lest Allah's Messenger  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) should be aware of my nearness and go still farther, and I began to talk to myself. I suddenly found Allah's Messenger  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) before me and the two trees were separated and each one of them was standing at its place. I saw Allah's Messenger  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) standing for a short time, nodding his head towards right and left.” [Muslim]

·        Ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported,

“Once a Bedouin came to the Messenger  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) and said, ‘How do I know that you are truly a messenger from Allah?’ He  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) said: ‘If I call this bunch of fruits on the date palm tree and it responds to me, would you then testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?’The Bedouin replied in the affirmative, so he, sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam, called the bunch and the bunch climbed down until it fell on the ground, then it moved towards the Prophet  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) until it reached him. Then he  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) commanded it, saying: ‘Go back,’and it returned to its place. Thereupon, the Bedouin said, ‘I swear by Allah! I will never belie you in anything you say and I testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.’”[Al-Haakim]

·        Ibn Mas’ood, may Allah be pleased with him, reported, “The Messenger  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) entered Makkah while there were 360 idols placed around the Ka’bah, so he  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) began to thrust them with the stick that was in his hand reciting the saying of Allah (which means): {Truth has come and falsehood has vanished. Lo! falsehood was destined to vanish.}[Quran, 17: 81], and the saying of Allah The Almighty (which means): {Truth has arrived, and falsehood can neither create anything from the beginning nor can it restore to life.}[Quran, 34: 49] Whenever he pointed at any of them, it would fall down.”[Muslim]

·        Jaabir bin 'Abdullaah may Allah be pleased with him, reported,

“The Prophet  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) used to stand by a tree or a date-palm on Friday. Then a woman from the Ansaar asked, ‘O Allah's Apostle! Shall we make a pulpit for you?’He  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) replied: ‘If you wish.’So they made a pulpit for him and when it was Friday, he  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) proceeded towards the pulpit (for delivering the sermon). The date-palm then cried like a child! The Prophet  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) descended (from the pulpit) and embraced it while it continued whimpering like a child being calmed. The Prophet  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) said: ‘It was crying for (missing) what it used to hear of religious knowledge given near to it.’” [Al-Bukhari]

Another narration adds, “Then, the Prophet  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) said to it: ‘You have the choice either that I implant you in another spot or in Paradise and drink from its rivers and springs, and thus become fruitful and the righteous (inhabitants of Paradise) will eat from your fruits.’ The trunk chose the Hereafter. He  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allah exalt his mention ) further said: ‘Had I not embraced it, it would have cried until the Day of Resurrection.’ [Al-Bukhari]

The Miracle & Challenge of the Quran - II

As mentioned previously, Muhammad,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), lived among tribes of people who were for the most part illiterate, and he himself was also illiterate. These people would live extremely simple lives. Some were traders and businessmen, others were farmers, and yet others were nomadic sheep-herders who traveled from place to place depending on where they could find grass for their sheep to graze.

When Muhammad,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), brought them the Quran, the believers found in the Quran the command to go out, seek knowledge, and confirm the presence of their Creator by studying His creation. Muslims began to fulfill this command of the Quran and this resulted in one of the greatest explosions of scientific advancement mankind has ever seen. All of this was going on during a period that the West calls the Dark Ages, wherein the scientists of the West were being persecuted and killed as sorcerers and wizards. During this period, Muslims scholars introduced into the world such things as:

·         Mathematical evolution of spherical mirrors

·         Rectilinear motion of light and use of lenses

·         Preparing a calendar that was more accurate than the Gregorian one in use today

·         And much, much more.

All of this began with a single unlettered Arab from the desert fourteen hundred years ago. The book that was brought into the world by such a man cries out to be studied from a scientific aspect. We will now give you a glimpse of the results.

{So ask the People of Knowledge if you do not know .} [Quran 21:7]

Example Number 1, Embryology:

Dr. Keith L. Moore is a Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Toronto, Canada. He is a world renowned scientist and a distinguished researcher in the fields of anatomy and embryology; he has published more than 150 research articles, chapters and books in this field. He is the author of several medical textbooks, such as the widely used and acclaimed The Developing Human: Clinically oriented Embryology (now in it's fifth edition, and translated into eight different languages); Before We Are Born, and Clinically Oriented Anatomy. He has also recently co-authored The Quran and Modern Science, Correlation Studies. Dr. Moore is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including, in 1984, the J.C.B. Grant Award, which is the highest honor granted by the Canadian Association of Anatomists. He has served in many academic and administrative positions, including the President of the Canadian Association of Anatomists, 1968-1970. Let us see what Dr. Moore's opinion is on the scientific statements regarding embryology to be found in the Quran:

Dr. Moore was contacted by a Muslim scholar by the name of Abdul-Majeed Az-Zindani. He was asked to participate in a three-year study of around twenty-five verses of the Quran and the Sunnah (Prophetic traditions) which speak about embryology, and to determine the their correspondence to modern scientific discoveries. Dr. Moore's conclusion regarding this matter was,

For the past three years, I have worked with the Embryology Committee of King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, helping them to understand the many statements in the Quran and the Sunnah referring to human reproduction and prenatal development. At first I was astonished by the accuracy of the statements that were recorded in the seventh century AD, before the science of embryology was established. Although I was aware of the glorious history of Muslim scientists in the 10th century AD, and of some of their contributions to Medicine, I knew nothing about the religious facts and beliefs contained in the Quran and Sunnah. It is important for Islamic and other students to understand the meaning of these Quranic statements about human development, based on current scientific knowledge. The interpretations of the verses in the Quran and the Sunnah, translated by Shaikh Az-Zindani, are to the best of my knowledge accurate.  [From the forward of The Developing Human: Clinically oriented Embryology, third edition, by Dr. Keith L. Moore]

The Quran and the Sunnah of the prophet Muhammad,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), provide a very detailed description of the microscopic development of the human embryo from a mere sperm drop up to the stage of a completely formed human being. It is well known that microscopes were not developed until the sixteenth century AD, and even at that were very crude in design. Zacharias Janssen is credited with having invented the compound microscope in about 1590. With it, remarkable scientific discoveries were made in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Dutch naturalist Anthony van Leeuwenhoek produced lenses powerful enough to prove that many tiny creatures are not spontaneously generated but come from eggs.

Before this period, theories on human reproduction ran rampant. Some scientists believed that the menstrual blood itself developed into the fetus. Later on, a new theory was developed wherein the sperm drop was popularly believed to contain a completely developed miniature human (homunculus) which later grew to the size of a baby. The science of embryology as we know it today did not discover many of the detailed aspects of human development which are taken for granted today until only about twenty years ago, or 1973 to be precise.

Now we must ask the question: where did Muhammad,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), get such detailed knowledge of the microscopic development of the human embryo in the 6th century AD without a microscope, technical training, a laboratory of any kind, or even the ability to write his own name? The only logical conclusion is that it came from exactly where he claimed it did. From the one who created mankind, God Almighty.

Prof. Moore has since given numerous lectures on the topic of embryology in the Quran. He is quoted in one of these lectures as saying, "It is clear to me that these statements must have come to Muhammad from God, or Allah, because most of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later. This proves to me that Muhammad must have been a messenger of God, or Allah."

Prof. Moore was so impressed with the Quranic classification of the stages of development of the human embryo, that he suggested the adoption of the Quranic system in place of the system currently in use by scientists today. Prof. Moore said,

"Because the staging of the human embryo is complex owing to the continuous process of change during development. It is therefore suggested that a new system of classification could be developed using the terms mentioned in the Quran and the Sunnah. The proposed system is simple, comprehensive, and conforms with present embryological knowledge."

When Dr. Moore first presented his findings in Toronto it caused quite a stir throughout Canada. It was on the front pages of some of the newspapers across Canada. One newspaper reporter asked Professor Moore,

"Don't you think that maybe the Arabs might have known about these things - the description of the embryo, its appearance and how it changes and grows? Maybe there were not scientists, but maybe they did some crude dissections on their own - carved up people and examined these things."

Professor Moore immediately pointed out to him, however, that he had missed a very important point. All of the slides of the embryo that Dr. Moore had based his study upon had come from pictures taken through a microscope. He said,

"It does not matter if someone had tried to discover embryology fourteen centuries ago, they could not have seen it!" Dr. Moore added, "Maybe fourteen centuries ago someone secretly had a microscope and did this research, making no mistakes anywhere. Then he somehow taught Muhammad and convinced him to put this information in his book. Then he destroyed his equipment and kept it a secret forever? Do you believe that? You really should not unless you bring some proof because it is such a ridiculous theory." When he was asked "How do you explain this information in the Quran?" Dr. Moore's reply was, "It could only have been divinely revealed."

The Miracle & Challenge of the Quran - I

{We shall show them Our signs on the horizons and within themselves until it will become clear to them that it is the Truth. Does it not suffice that your Lord is Witness over all things?}[Quran 41:53]

Muslims are taught that throughout the ages, Allah Almighty has sent a prophet to every nation as a warner and a bearer of glad tidings; He says what means:
{Verily! We have sent you (O Muhammad) with the Truth, a bearer of glad tidings and a warner, and there is not a nation but a warner has passed among them.} [Quran 35:24]

Each prophet was wisely selected by Allah in order to be the best person for the task. He was then provided by Allah with miracles as proof of his truthfulness and his message. These miracles were wisely selected by Allah in order to be in the same field as that which the people that the prophet was sent to excelled in so that they could fully comprehend the magnitude of these miracles.

For instance, the people during the time of Moosaa (Moses), may Allah exalt his mention, excelled at magical trickery. Their rulers would surround themselves with the most powerful of these wizards as a sign of power. This is why Allah made the miracles of Moosaa, may Allah exalt his mention, similar to their magical trickery (changing a stick into a snake, the parting of the sea... etc.) but of a much greater magnitude than anything they could ever hope to accomplish for they were not tricks, but actual physical miracles.

The people at the time of the prophet ‘Eesa (Jesus), may Allah exalt his mention, excelled in matters of medicine. For this reason, his miracles were of a medical nature (raising of the dead, healing the blind...etc.), but of a degree that his people could never hope to imitate. Similarly, one of the major miracles of Islam was a new and unheard-of type of literature similar to Bedouin poetry but far beyond anything they could ever hope to match, although they certainly tried. This new literature was called the Quran.

The Arabic language, as can be attested to by any of it's scholars, is a very rich and powerful language. The Bedouin people of the Arabian desert were, in general, illiterate people with very little scientific knowledge. The thing that set them apart, however, was their mastery of poetry. Spending their days as they did in the desert watching their sheep graze got quite boring, and so they alleviated their boredom by continually composing and refining poetry. They would spend entire years composing and refining their poetry in anticipation of a yearly face-down of the poetic compositions of their peers from all over their lands. The fact that they were illiterate forced them to also train themselves in the memorization of works of literature to such an extent that they were able to memorize complete works from a single recitation. Even in matters of leadership, one of the major criteria for selecting the leaders of the various Bedouin tribes was the individual's prowess in literary composition and memorization.

The Arabian Bedouins took great pains to make their poetry as compact and picturesque as humanly possible, constantly expanding the language along the way. A single word could convey complete pictures. The Quran, however, has put even these great efforts to shame. One would notice that when a Muslim translates a verse of the Quran, he usually does not say, "The Quran says such and such" but rather "An approximation of the meaning of what the Quran says is such and such." One really needs to know the language to comprehend this.

In the English language, we find that the words mustang, colt, mare, pony, stallion, bronco, etc., all refer to the same thing, which is a horse. Each one of these words conveys a slightly different mental picture. The mental picture we get when we hear the word colt is slightly different than the picture we get if we hear the word mare. In a similar manner, the Arabic language has progressed in such a fashion as to make it possible to convey such mental pictures in as concise and picturesque a format as possible. It is not at all uncommon to find over three hundred words that refer to the same thing in the Arabic language. Each one of these words gives a slightly different picture than the others.

Many centuries of this constant refinement eventually lead to a very complex and rich vocabulary, and the primary miracle of Muhammad,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), may Allah exalt his mention, the Quran, was in exactly this field.

In the noble Quran, we find a challenge from Allah to compose a literary work on a par with this Quran, if it is indeed the work of mankind, but nobody could do so. The Quran continued to reduce it's challenge until the challenge finally became to compose a single verse comparable to the Quran, but still people could not. This, in addition to the fairness, justice, and logic of the Quran, eventually won them over and slowly more and more people became Muslims.

"Well then, if the Koran were his own (Muhammad's) composition other men could rival it. Let them produce ten verses like it. If they could not (and it is obvious that they could not), then let them accept the Koran as an outstanding evidential miracle." [Mohammedanism, H. A. R. Gibb, Oxford University Press, p. 42]

"In making the present attempt to improve on the performance of my predecessors, and to produce something which might be accepted as echoing however faintly the sublime rhetoric of the Arabic Koran, I have been at pains to study the intricate and richly varied rhythms which - apart from the message itself - constitute the Koran's undeniable claim to rank amongst the greatest literary masterpieces of mankind... This very characteristic feature - 'that inimitable symphony,' as the believing Pickthall described his Holy Book, 'the very sounds of which move men to tears and ecstasy' - has been almost totally ignored by previous translators; it is therefore not surprising that what they have wrought sounds dull and flat indeed in comparison with the splendidly decorated original " [The Koran Interpreted, Arthur J. Arberry, Oxford University Press, 1964, p. x.]

"The Koran admittedly occupies an important position among the great religious books of the world. Though the youngest of the epoch-making works belonging to this class of literature, it yields to hardly any in the wonderful effect which it has produced on large masses of men. It has created an all but new phase of human thought and a fresh type of character. It first transformed a number of heterogeneous desert tribes of the Arabian peninsula into a nation of heroes, and then proceeded to create the vast politico-religious organizations of the Muhammadan world which are one of the great forces with which Europe and the East have to reckon today " [G. Margoliouth, Introduction to J.M. Rodwell's, The Koran, New York: Everyman's Library, 1977, p. vii]

" A work, then, which calls forth so powerful and seemingly incompatible emotions even in the distant reader - distant as to time, and still more so as a mental development - a work which not only conquers the repugnance which he may begin its perusal, but changes this adverse feeling into astonishment and admiration, such a work must be a wonderful production of the human mind indeed and a problem of the highest interest to every thoughtful observer of the destinies of mankind ... Here, therefore, its merits as a literary production should perhaps not be measured by some preconceived maxims of subjective and aesthetic taste, but by the effects which it produced in Muhammad's contemporaries and fellow countrymen. If it spoke so powerfully and convincingly to the hearts of his hearers as to weld hitherto centrifugal and antagonistic elements into one compact and well-organized body, animated by ideas far beyond those which had until now ruled the Arabian mind, then its eloquence was perfect, simply because it created a civilized nation out of savage tribes, and shot a fresh woof into the old warp of history." [Dr. Steingass, quoted in T.P. Hughes' Dictionary Of Islam, p. 526-528]

Many claims have been made against Muhammad,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), in that day and this. Among them are the claims that he was a lunatic, a liar, or deceived by the devil. If Muhammad was a lunatic or a liar, then we have to wonder how all of his prophesies came true. Further, if he was a deceived by Satan then we are faced with another problem, for we know that all Muslims are taught that when reading the Quran they must first begin with the words "I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the accursed one." and then follow this up with the words "In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful" So we have to wonder if Satan would inspire a man to teach mankind to seek refuge in God from Satan? Indeed this is the exact same accusation which was made against ‘Eesa, may Allah exalt his mention. Let us read he responded to this claim,

"But some of them (the Jews) said, He (Jesus) casteth out devils through Beelzebub (Satan) the chief of the devils. And others, tempting [him], sought of him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house [divided] against a house falleth. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub " [Luke 11:15-18]

It has been the case throughout the ages that with all previous prophets, their miracle was separate from their book. Although we may claim that we have the "Torah" of Moosaa, may Allah exalt his mention, it is not possible now to bring Moosaa’s staff and see it perform miracles as it did in his time. Similarly it is not possible today to see ‘Eesa, may Allah exalt his mention, raise the dead as he did so many centuries ago. However, since the message of Islam was the final message of God to mankind, therefore, the book of Islam itself was made the main miracle of Islam and it has continued to renew it's challenge to mankind throughout the ages.

What does this mean? Nowadays, the number of people who can appreciate the literary content of the Quran has dwindled and this challenge no longer has the same impact it did fourteen hundred years ago. However, as we have seen in the verse quoted at the beginning of this article, Allah Almighty has promised to continually renew the challenge of the Quran throughout the ages. So how will it be renewed?
Recently, a new field of study has opened up to scholars. People nowadays are fascinated with science. This is the age of technology and scientific discovery. For this reason, mankind has begun to study the religious scriptures of mankind from a scientific point of view in order to challenge the scientific claims made in these scriptures. Many works have been published on this topic. In this article, I will give a brief taste of these matters and then leave it up to the interested reader to learn more from any one of the many books which have been published in this regard.

His Miracles and Proofs of his Prophethood – II

The Sixth Type: Water Flowing from his Fingers and the Increase of Food, Drink and Fruit in his Hand

A- The flowing of water and increase of drink
This happened frequently to the Messenger of Allah,     sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ). [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] For example:
1- The people became very thirsty on the Day of the       Hudaybiyah Treaty, so the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam placed his hand in a vessel and water began flowing     from in between his fingers as if it were water springs. They    drank and performed ablution from it. It was said to Jaabir, may Allah be pleased with him, “How many were you?” He replied, “Even if we had been one-hundred-thousand, it would have been sufficient for us, but we were fifteen- hundred.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
2- The Messenger of Allah,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), arrived in Tabook and found its water spring with very shallow water, like a shoelace. The people then gathered the water of the spring in their palms until it became somewhat significant and the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, washed his hands and face in it, and then returned that water back into the spring. Thereupon, the water gushed abundantly. This spring still exists now.  [Muslim]
3- The story of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, and the vessel of milk. The milk increased in quantity in the vessel and it was enough for all the guests, (i.e. the  people of As-Suffah). [Al-Bukhari]

B- The increase of food due to the blessing bestowed upon the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) by Allah The Almighty. For example:
1- During a Battle, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was with a thousand four hundred (1, 400) of his  Companions, may Allah be pleased with them. There was only a little food with them and they were very hungry. The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), commanded them to gather all the food they had and put it on a carpet. He,     sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), supplicated to Allah The Almighty that the food would be blessed, and they all ate their fill. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
2- During the Battle of the Trench, the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, and the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, remained without any food for three days. Jaabir, may Allah be pleased with him, slaughtered a she-goat and his wife ground a Saa‘ (two cupped handfuls) of barley. Jaabir, may Allah be pleased with him, then invited the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ). Thereupon, the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), called out to all the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, and invited them to eat from that small amount of food. The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), spat into the dough and asked for Allah's blessing to be bestowed upon it and then  spat into the vessel and it was also blessed. Though they were more than one thousand people, they ate their fill and even left some behind. Jaabir, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “I swear by Allah, that they ate [so much] and they still left the food while our pot was still boiling as it was [i.e. still full of food] and the dough was still being baked as it was [i.e. it had not decreased].”[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

There are countless other examples in this respect.

C- The increase of fruit and grains
1- A person came to the Messenger of Allah,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), and asked him for food. He gave him half a Wasaq (a unit of measurement) of barley. The man and his family continued to eat from it until he weighed it (for he     wanted to know its quantity as he was astonished that it was not finished). He then went to the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, who said: “Had you not weighed it, you would have still eaten from it, and it  would have remained for a long time.” [Muslim]
2- Jaabir's father, may Allah be pleased with him, was in debt and for years the production of Jaabir’s palm trees was not enough to pay off his father's debts. Jaabir, may Allah be pleased with him, went to the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), in order to attend the measuring (i.e. paying back the debts for the creditors), so he did. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, walked around one heap (of  dates and supplicated Allah to endow His Blessings upon     it). Then he commanded Jaabir, may Allah be pleased with him, to measure for them until he paid all the debts. Jaabir, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “My dates remained  as if nothing was taken from them.” [Al-Bukhari]

The Seventh Type: Allah Supports him with Angels

Allah The Exalted supported His Messenger with angels in many incidents in order to make him, as well as his religion, victorious. The following are some examples:
          1- During the Hijrah (emigration):
Allah The Exalted Says (what means): {Allah sent down His tranquility upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the Word of Allah - that is    the highest.} [Quran 9:40]
2- During the Battle of Badr:
Allah The Exalted Says (what means): {[Remember] when you asked help of your Lord, and He answered you, “Indeed, I will reinforce you with a thousand from the angels, following one another.”}[Quran 8:9]
3- During the Battle of of Uhud:
Jibreel (Gabriel) and Meekaa’eel (Michael), may Allah exalt  their mention, fought on the right and left sides of theProphet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) in this battle. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
4- During the Battle of the Trench:
Allah The Exalted Says (what means): {O you who have      believed, remember the favor of Allah upon you when    armies came to [attack] you and We sent upon them a wind and armies [of angels] you did not see. And ever is Allah,  of what you do, Seeing.} [Quran 33:9]
5- During the Battle of Banu Quraythah:
After the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), put down his weapon and took a bath, Jibreel, may Allah exalt his mention, said to him, “Have you put down your weapon? By Allah, we [the angels] have not put them down [yet]. So set   out for them.” The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), asked: “Where to?” Jibreel, may Allah exalt his mention, pointed towards Banu Quraythah. So, the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), set out and Allah The Almighty granted him victory and supported him against them. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
6- During the Battle of Hunayn:
Allah The Exalted Says (what means): {Then Allah sent    down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers and sent down soldiers angels whom you did not see and punished those who disbelieved. And that is the recompense of the disbelievers.} [Quran 9:26]

The Eighth Type: Allah Protects him from his Enemies and Safeguards him from People

This type of miracle is one of the greatest signs indicating the truthfulness of the message of Muhammad,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ). This includes:
1- Allah The Exalted protected him against the polytheists     and those who mocked him, and so they did not afflict him    with harm. Allah The Exalted Says (what means): {Then  declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists. Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers.} [Quran 15:94-95]
2- Allah Protected him against the People of the Book, as Allah The Exalted Says (what means): {So if they believe in the same as you believe in, then they have been [rightly] guided; but if they turn away, they are only in dissension, and Allah will be Sufficient for you against    them. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.} [Quran 2:137]
3- Allah The Exalted protected him from all people in    general. He Says (what means): {O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His Message. And Allah will safeguard you from the people. Indeed,     Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.} [Quran 5:67]
This is a general statement that Allah The Exalted safeguards the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), from all people. All these three foretellings occurred as Allah The Exalted informed us. He safeguarded the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), from his enemies by wonderful and extraordinary deeds and made him victorious even though he had many enemies, and their power and predominance was great.

Also, He took revenge against those who harbored enmity towards him: There was a Christian who embraced Islam and read the Soorahs of Al-Baqarah and ’Aal-‘Imraan. He would also write down revelations for the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Later, he apostasized and returned to Christianity. He would then say, “Muhammad knows nothing except what I have written for him.” Then Allah The Almighty caused him to die, and his people buried him, but in the morning they saw that the earth had expelled his body. They reburied him and dug the grave deeper for him, but the next morning they again saw that the earth had expelled his body. They reburied him and dug the grave for him as deep as they could, but in the morning they again saw that the earth had expelled his body. They therefore came to the conclusion that what had befallen him was not done by human beings and so they left him thrown on the ground. [Al- Bukhaari and Muslim]

The Ninth Type: His Supplications Being Answered

There are many incidents during which the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), supplicated to Allah The Almighty, and his supplications were answered as clear as the sun at midday. Such incidents are countless and cannot all be mentioned here, so we will suffice ourselves with a few examples:
1- It was narrated that the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, supplicated for Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, saying: “O Allah, increase his wealth and progeny and bless what You have given him.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] The narration of Al-Bukhari, may Allah have mercy upon him, adds: “…and prolong his life and forgive him.” Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said in later life: “By Allah, my fortune is huge and my  children and grandchildren now number over a hundred.”  [Muslim] It was also narrated that he said, “My daughter Umaynah told me that by the time Al-Hajjaaj came to Al- Basra, more than one    hundred and twenty of my offspring had been buried (i.e. they had died).” [Al-Bukhari] He also had a garden producing fruit twice a year which also contained scented plants that had the smell of musk. [At-Tirmithi]
2- The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), supplicated to Allah The Almighty for the mother of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him. Allah The Exalted immediately guided her and she embraced Islam. Her story is indeed an amazing one. [Muslim]
3- The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), said to ‘Urwah  ibn Abi Al-Ja‘d Al-Baariqi, may Allah be pleased with him: “O Allah, bless for him the deals [that he concludes with] his hand.” He would stop in Al-Kufah and profit forty-thousand  before he returned to his family. [Ahmad in his Musnad] ‘Urwah, may Allah be pleased with him, would profit from any deal, even if he bought dust. [Al-Bukhari]
4- The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), also supplicated to Allah The Almighty  against some of his       enemies and his supplications were answered, such as those against Abu Jahl, ’Umayyah, ‘Uqbah, ‘Utbah and many others. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
5-The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), supplicated to Allah The Almighty during the Day of Badr and the Day of Hunayn, and he,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), also supplicated for Suraaqah ibn Maalik, may Allah be pleased with him, and many others. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

The fact is that a just wise person would stand before these signs and proofs astonished, having nothing to say but, “I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), is the Messenger of Allah.”

His Miracles and Proofs of his Prophethood–I

As a whole, the Sharee‘ah which is stated in the Quran revolves around three interests:
The First Interest: The elimination of evil from six matters: religion, the self, the mind, lineage, honor and wealth.

The Second Interest: The realization of benefit: The Quran opens all doors to attain benefits in all fields and eliminates every means that would most likely lead to sin.

The Third Interest: Adhering to high morals and fine practices.

The Noble Quran solves the universal problems that humans are unable to solve. It does not leave an aspect that humans need regarding this worldly life or the Hereafter without stating rules for it and guiding them to it in the best and most moderate way.

The Fourth Aspect: Modern scientific miracles of the Quran
This is connected to informing about the unseen future, aspects of which have been discovered by science in the modern age. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?}[Quran 41:53]

The promise of Allah The Almighty has been recently fulfilled when people saw the signs of Allah in the horizons and in creatures through the most delicate sophisticated devices and means, such as planes, submarines and other modern devices that the human has not possessed until the modern age. Therefore, who told Muhammad,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), about these unseen matters one thousand four hundred years ago? This clearly indicates that the Quran is the words of Allah and Muhammad,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), is truly the Messenger of Allah.

Scientific miracles are discovered on the earth and in the sky, seas, deserts, in humans, animals, plants, trees, and insects. There are innumerable examples for this and there is no space to enumerate them all.

The Second Subject: Tangible miracles of the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention )

There were many tangible supernatural miracles of the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) which are, again, innumerable. We will therefore briefly mention nine types of these miracles as examples:

The First Type: High Realm Miracles

1- The splitting of the moon: This was one of the key miracles of the Messenger of Allah,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), indicating that he was truthful. The Makkans asked him to show them a sign, so he pointed to the moon and it split into two parts so that they saw the mountain of Hiraa’ between them. [Al-Bukhari]
Allah The Exalted Says (what means): {The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two]. And if they see a miracle, they turn away and say, “Passing magic.” And they denied and followed their inclinations. But for every matter is a [time of] settlement.} [Quran 54:1-3]

2- His ascension beyond the upper heavens on the night of Israa’ and Mi‘raaj (The Prophet's night journey to Al-Aqsa mosque and the upper heavens): This was mentioned in the Noble Quran as well as the the relevant Hadeeths. Allah The Exalted Says (what means): {Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haraam to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our Signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.} [Quran 17:1]

This was indeed one of the greatest miracles of the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ). He was taken from Makkah to Al-Aqsa mosque, through this long distance, in a very short time, and then ascended to the heavens. He reached a place where the sound of the angels' writing could be heard. He saw Paradise. The five daily prayers were prescribed there. Then he returned to Makkah before morning. The Quraysh, however, belied him and asked him for signs indicating his truthfulness. Knowing that the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), had not seen Al-Aqsa mosque before, the Quraysh asked him to describe it. Allah The Exalted showed it to him and he began telling them about its signs and answered their questions. [Al-Bukhari]

This is in addition to many other high realm miracles such as the guarding of the heavens by burning flames at the beginning of his prophethood.

The Second Type: Miracles Related to Climate

This type of miracle includes the following:
1- The clouds' obedience to the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), by the permission of Allah The Almighty. Once, when they were being formed, rain came forth and the clouds were then removed upon his supplication.

2- Allah The Exalted supported the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), by the wind. He Says (what means): {O you who have believed, remember the favor of Allah upon you when armies came to [attack] you and We sent upon them a wind and armies [of angels] you did not see. And ever is Allah, of what you do, Seeing.} [Quran 33:9] This was As-Saba (an easterly wind) which Allah The Exalted sent upon the enemies during the Battle of Al-Ahzaab. It was narrated that the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), said: “I have been made victorious by As-Saba [an easterly wind] and the people of ‘Aad were destroyed by Ad-Daboor [a westerly wind].”[Muslim]

The Third Type: His Actions with Animals, Humans, Jinn and Beasts

This type of miracle has many patterns. Here we will mention some examples:

A- His Actions with Humans
1- ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib, may Allah be pleased with him, was once complaining about a pain in his eyes. The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), therefore spat into them and supplicated to Allah The Almighty and they were healed,    and it was as if he had never experienced pain before in them. [Al-Bukhari]
2- The leg of ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Ateek, may Allah be pleased with him, broke. The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), wiped it and it was cured as if it had never been broken. [Al-Bukhari]
3- On the Day of Khaybar, Salamah ibn Al-’Akwa‘, may Allah be pleased with him, was injured in his leg after being struck. The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), breathed on it thrice. Salamah, may Allah be pleased with him, therefore, never felt any pain in it thereafter. [Abu Daawood]

B- His Actions with the Jinn and Devils
1- The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), would expel  the Jinn from a person simply by addressing him, saying: “Get out, O enemy of Allah. I am the Messenger of Allah.” [Ahmad]
2- He expelled a devil from the chest of ‘Uthmaan ibn ’Abi Al-‘Aas, may Allah be pleased with him. He hit ‘Uthmaan's chest thrice, spat into his mouth, and said: “Get out, O enemyof Allah.” He did so thrice. The devil did not     approach ‘Uthmaan, may Allah be pleased with him, after that. [Ibn Maajah]

C- His Actions with Beasts
This frequently happened to the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ). Once, a camel came and prostrated itself to the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ). Upon seeing this, the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, said, “O Messenger of Allah! The beasts and trees prostrate to you; we are worthy of prostrating to you.” The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), said: “Worship your Lord and treat your brother kindly. Had I ordered anyone to prostrate to any other creature, I would have commanded the woman to prostrate for her husband.”[Ahmad]

The Fourth Type: His Effect on Trees, Fruit and Wood

A- His effect on trees:
1- A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), while he was on a journey. The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), called him to Islam. The Bedouin said, “Who will testify to what you say?” The Messenger of Allah,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), said: “That tree [pointing to a desert tree.]”He called it over  and it was on the side of a valley. Thereupon, it came, cutting its way through the ground until it stood before him.      The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), asked it to testify     thrice, which it did, and then returned to its original place. ` [Ad-Daarimi]
2- Once, while he was on a journey, the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), wanted to answer the call of nature. He found nothing that he could hide behind. He took hold of a tree's branch and said: “Be under my control, by the permission of Allah.” Thereupon, it came under his control like a reined camel. He took it until he came to a second tree and took hold of a branch thereof and said the same thing. Then he commanded them to join together and they obeyed him. Having relieved himself, the two trees separated and each one of them stood at its original place. [Muslim]

B- His effect on fruit
A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), and asked, “How do I know that you are a prophet?” He  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “If I called this bunch of dates off this palm-tree, would you    testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?” The Messenger of Allah,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), called it and it descended from the palm-tree until it came to him. Then the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), ordered it to    return to its place and it did. Thereupon, the Bedouin embraced Islam.  [At-Tirmithi, Al-Haakim and Ahmad]

C- His effect on wood
In Madeenah, the Messenger of Allah  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), would deliver the Friday Khutbah while leaning against the trunk of a palm-tree. When he had the pulpit made, he began to use it instead. The tree trunk therefore started crying like a child (and mooing like a cow, out of sadness as it missed the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu‘alayhi wa sallam). The Messenger of Allah,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), went to it, embraced it and started stroking it until it stopped crying. [Al-Bukhari]

The Fifth Type: His Effect on Mountains and Stones and Their Being Subjected to Him

A- His effect on mountains
Once the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), ascended    the mountain of Uhud and Abu Bakr, ‘Umar and ‘Uthmaan, may Allah be pleased with them, were accompanying him. The mountain trembled beneath them. The Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), hit it with his foot, and said:  “Steady Uhud, for upon you there is a Prophet, a Siddeeq [the title of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, which means: the steadfast affirmer of  truth] and two martyrs [i.e. ‘Umar and ‘Uthmaan,  may  Allah be pleased with them].” [Al-Bukhari]

B- His effect on stones
The Messenger of Allah,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), said: “Indeed, I know a stone in Makkah which would greet me before my Bi‘thah [i.e. prophethood]. I [still] remember [its place until] now.” [Muslim]

C- His effect on dust
During the Battle of Hunayn, the fighting grew fierce and the Prophet,  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ), dismounted his mule, took a handful of dust from the ground, threw it at the enemy's faces and said: “May these faces be deformed.” There was  no one among the enemy whose eyes were not filled with the dust from this handful. Allah The Exalted defeated them, and the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, distributed the booties among the Muslims. [Muslim]

The Role of Astronomy In Islam

Allah says (what means):

“We have not created the heaven and the earth and all that is between them in mere idle play. None of this have We created without an inner truth: but most of them understand it not.” [Quran 44: 38-39]
“In the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and day, and the ships which sail the seas to people's benefit, and the water which Allah sends down from the sky -- by which He brings the earth to life when it was dead and scatters about in it creatures of every kind -- and the varying direction of the winds, and the clouds subservient between heaven and earth, there are signs for people who use their intellect.” [Quran 2:164]
Need more be said? One of the purposes of the Holy Qur'an's revelation is to invite people to think. What can possibly be more straightforward than that regarding our conduct here on earth with respect to the use of our intellect to understand the world around us. The holy Qur’an delves into the many signs of Allah in nature, around us and within us to convey a deep sense of awe at the many signs of our Lord, apparent to those who use intellect. It is truly remarkable that the Qur’an revealed between 610 and 632 CE contains in it, scientific knowledge that has taken centuries to be discovered. The only explanation for this is that without a doubt, it is divine in origin. We Muslims believe that the Qur’an, in original Arabic, is the actual word of Allah, the Most High. A proper understanding of the Qur’an therefore also requires an understanding of science. It is not the purpose of the Qur’an to explain science to us but it encourages persons to reflect on the works of creation so that we may realize the greatness of Almighty God. Before we delve any further, it is necessary to make clear a very important distinction – that between Astronomy and Astrology – the two terms are often confused by many persons as meaning the same. They cannot be further from each other. Astronomy is a science and halal whereas astrology is a pseudo science and haram. Astronomy deals with the study of the heavens in an effort to understand the underlying principles governing the behaviour of the planets, stars and galaxies and the Universe in general. Astrology claims to predict the destinies of persons as a result of the ‘action’ of planets and so on, on their lives. There has not been to date any contradiction between Astronomy, as we understand it, and the Qur’an.
The Qur’an deals with many areas of science such as geology of earth, the animal and vegetable kingdom, human reproduction and Astronomy. This article concentrates on the position of Astronomy in Islam with emphasis on observed facts and not theories. A theory is used to explain an observed or hypothesized phenomena and it may be modified, changed, or rejected in due course depending on how appropriate it may be against observational data. Theories can be subjective in nature. An observation is a fact and is not liable to be changed but may be further refined.
This article does not deal with speculative Astronomy. Because like all sciences, we do not understand everything and there are many things that remain as models. It should be borne in mind that a thousand experiments will not prove a theory correct but one experiment can disprove it. Understanding the underlying principles behind the clockwork of the Universe endows us with a far deeper sense of awe and appreciation of the One that created it. The sentiment is similar to that expressed by Physicist Richard Feynman:
“I have a friend who's an artist and he's sometimes taken a view which I don't agree with very well. He'll hold up a flower and say. “Look how beautiful it is,“ and I'll agree, I think. And he says - “ you see, I as an artist can see how beautiful this is, but you as a scientist, oh, take this all apart and it becomes a dull thing.“ And I think that he's kind of nutty. First of all, the beauty that he sees is available to other people and to me, too, I believe, although I might not be quite as refined aesthetically as he is, but I can appreciate the beauty of a flower. At the same time I see much more about the flower than he sees. I could imagine the cells in there, the complicated actions inside which also have a beauty. I mean it's not just beauty at this dimension of one centimeter, there is also beauty at a smaller dimension, the inner structure. Also the processes, the fact that the colors in the flower are evolved in order to attract insects to pollinate it is interesting - it means that insects can see the color. It adds a question: Does this aesthetic sense also exist in the lower form? Why is it aesthetic? All kinds of interesting questions which a science knowledge only adds to the excitement and mystery and the awe of a flower. It only adds; I don't understand how it subtracts.“ - Richard P. Feynman (1918-1988)

It not only adds, but enriches, it deepens. Understanding and developing an appreciation of creations of Allah using the tools of science can enrich and deepen a believer’s consciousness of the Creator.
If there is any religion that invites man to the study and understanding of the heavens, it is Islam. An understanding of the discipline of Astronomy is essential for the appreciation of the religion of Islam. No other religion uses or relies on the heavens and the motion of the moon and sun for timekeeping and calendars as Islam does. Allah created this tremendous Universe that we live in and we are invited to reflect upon it, to understand it so that we may be able to practise our religion with conviction based on reason to the best of our abilities. By God’s laws, the laws of Physics, we are glued to the planet earth yet Almighty God granted us eyes, intellect and knowledge that we may see far in excess of our ordinary reach- surely in these things are signs of the omnipotence of our Creator.
Allah says (what means):
“Allah is He, who created the sun, the moon, and the stars (all) governed by laws under His commandment.” [Quran 7:54]
“He has made subject to you, the night and the day; the sun and the moon; and the stars in subjection by His command.” [Quran 14:33; 16:12]
Astronomy in the Qur’an
Just pause and try and imagine the Arabian night skies – crisp and clear, twinkling gently and kindly …invitingly, literally showing mankind the way. We see below a sampling of some of the mentions of Astronomy in the Qur’an. It is by no means a catalogue. The Qur’an tells us that the stars are there to guide us on land and sea.
Allah says (what means):
“And it is He who ordained the stars for you that you may be guided thereby in the darkness of the land and the sea.” [Quran 6:97]
“And marks and sign-posts and by the stars, (men) guide themselves.” [Quran 16:16]
If you become familiar with the constellations and the stars in the sky, one can never be lost anywhere in the world. They are truly a guiding light in the canopy of the heavens. You can be anywhere in the world and immediately on looking up in the night sky and by recognizing stars, you can know what latitude you are at and where is north and thereby all the other directions. You can know what time of the year it is in the absence of any calendars. It is rather appropriate that the crescent moon and star is used as signs to represent matters of religion among Muslims. The moon holds a most important position for the reckoning of time among Muslims. The lunar calendar is one of the oldest and a natural calendar system and astronomers acknowledge that the Muslim calendar is the only purely lunar calendar in wide use
Allah says (what means):
“They ask you about new crescent moons, say they are to mark fixed times for mankind and Hajj.” [Quran 2:189]
“And He who made the night for rest and sun and moon for reckoning of time. This is the decree of the Exalted, the All-knowing.” [Quran 6:96]
“It is He who made sun a lamp, and moon a light and measured stages so you know number of years and count (of time).” [Quran 10:5]
“And He subjected the sun and the moon (to His law); each one runs its course for a term appointed.” (13:2), (31:29), (35:13), and (39:5)
It is interesting to note that that the Qur’an refers to many heavens and earths. It is remarkable that one of the more recent discoveries in Astronomy has been that of other worlds such as ours.It was as recently as 1995 that the first planet outside of our solar system was discovered. To date several such planets have been found and extrasolar planets seem to be the rule rather than the exception. How many many aeons ago the Qur’an mentioned this!
“God is the One Who created seven heavens and of the earth a similar number. The command descends upon them so that you know that God has power over all things and comprehends all things in His knowledge.” [Quran 65:12]

The Qur’an always refers to the sun and moon differently. The sun is referred to as siraj (light) and zia (signifies that light which exists by itself) while the moon is referred to as nur – which means derived light. This is very accurate since the sun is a celestial body that gives off its own light because of nuclear processes in its interior. However the moon shines only by reflected light.
“And made the moon a light in their midst and made the sun as a (Glorious) lamp.” [Quran 71:16]
At the time of revelation of the Qur’an, it was a commonly held belief that the earth stood still and that the sun orbited around us. After all it seemed logical. Man’s ego was bigger than the universe or so he thought. It was easier to believe that he lived in the centre of the universe.
It was not until the16th century that the astronomer Copernicus showed otherwise, that the earth orbited around the sun instead. Just pause and look at the time interval when that piece of information was in the holy Qur’an. Hostility to Science generally and Astronomy particularly was the misfortune of the Catholic Church in the early 16th and 17th century. Let us not imitate them.
“It is He who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, all (the celestial bodies) swim along, each in its orbit.” [Quran 21:33]
“And the moon, we have measured for her mansions (to traverse) till she returns like the old, (withered, and curved-up like a sickle) date-palm. It is not permitted for sun to catch-up the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day; each swims along in (its own) orbit.” [Quran 36:39-40]
The stars adorn our night skies and endow one with a sense of peace with their gentle twinkling. The Qur’an says:
“Consider those (stars) that rise only to set. And move (in their orbits) with steady motion. And float (through space) with floating serene. And yet overtake (one another) with swift overtaking. And thus fulfil the (Creator’s) behest!” [Quran 79:1-5]
It is only on the scale of the galaxy that this verse comes to light! A galaxy is composed of millions and millions of stars. A galaxy like ours, the Milky Way is a spiral galaxy and rotates. Yes, the stars do move in an orbit and with steady motion too as they float through space. They do overtake one another because in any spiral structure that is rotating, the outer arms will move at a faster rate than the inner sections and will thereby overtake the stars on the interior in their motion. The spiral nature of our galaxy was only discovered in this century since its spiral nature is not easily evident to us as we reside inside.

There is order, cosmos…not chaos in this tremendous universe. The moon and earth float in orbits and they are predictable in their behaviour. It has been shown that if one planet was removed from our system, our solar system is no longer stable. Comets are predictable and they return as expected bound by the laws of Physics, God’s laws. Man can never truly invent, he can only discover. The Universe is predictable in its behaviour because Allah has subjugated its constituents and they obey him scrupulously, unlike man who has been granted will.

“Then He turned to the sky when it had been gas and said to it and the earth, condense willingly or unwillingly. And they said, “We condensed willingly.” [Quran 41:11]
Allah only has to say ‘Be’ and a thing is. It is important to note that present day physics cannot go back to the beginning of time but only very close to the ‘beginning’. The understanding of the physics of the universe begins at t = 10 –43 s, i.e. at 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 s. We now understand that the early universe was composed of hydrogen and helium gases and some regions were slightly colder or denser than other regions, these regions condensed to become galaxies composed off numerous stars within them. It is as recent as the 1950’s that such ideas have been explored. Yet there it is in the Qur’an as plain as daylight so many many hundreds of years ago. Even the concept of time is worthy of reflecting over. The order of a second may be comfortable to us but we have been able to use atomic clocks for timekeeping which have an accuracy of one part in 1012 .or meaning that if two Caesium clocks are operated they will differ by no more than 1 s after running for 6000 years! In these things are signs of our Lord…. Allah alone is worthy of praise!

“Consider the flight of time!” [Quran 103:1]

With respect to the expansion of the universe we find the following verse in the Quran:
“And the universe, we constructed with power and skill and verily we are expanding it.” [Quran 51:47]
To date all observations show that the Universe is expanding. Galaxies have been observed to be receding away from us at higher and higher speeds, the further away they are. This indicates that we live in an expanding universe. This was discovered in 1926 by Edwin Hubble. The concept of an expanding universe was so alien at the time that it owes to it the famous fudge factor by Albert Einstein. His calculations showed that the Universe should be expanding, but the concept was so bizarre that he included a constant into the equations so as to obtain a static Universe! This he modified later when Hubble observed that the Universe was expanding. It is far easier to be comfortable with the concept of a static universe than one that is expanding. Yet the Qur’an mentions even this, our expanding Universe.
“He Who created the seven heavens, one above another: No want of proportion will you see in the creation of Most Gracious, so turn your face again; Do you see any flaw ... .... And We have adorned the lowest heaven with lamps ....” [Quran 67:3-5]

Contribution of Muslim scholars to the development of Astronomy
The first verse that was ever revealed to Prophet Muhammad (UWBP) implores man towards the acquisition of knowledge:

“Read in the name of thy Sustainer, who has created – created man out of a germ cell! Read – for thy Sustainer is the Most Bountiful One. Who has taught (man) the use of the pen – Taught man what he did not know!” [Quran 96: 1-5]
A quick browsing through the holy Qur’an shows many Surahs beginning with astronomical references: “Consider those (stars) that rise only to set” [Quran 79:1]
< constellations” great of full sky the>
“Consider the heavens and that which comes in the night” [Quran 86:1]
“Consider the sun and its radiant brightness and the moon as it reflects the sun!” (91:1)” …… “Consider the sky and its wondrous make” [Quran 91:5]
“Consider the night as it veils (the earth) in darkness” [Quran 92:1]
It is our moral obligation to study Astronomy! Given the exposition in the previous section, it would seem natural that Astronomy should get its impetus first and foremost from Muslim Scholars. And so it was in the early years of Islam. Sadly, this trend has suffered a serious decline in the last few centuries. It is really interesting to note that Muslims were in fact the first to differentiate and separate the science of Astronomy from the pseudo science of astrology. The development of Astronomy suffered a great decline and the last of the great Muslim astronomers was Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (d. 1228 CE). Let us venture back in time and see the richness of the pursuit of knowledge particularly in Astronomy in the early days of Islam. Contributions to Astronomy by Muslim scholars will naturally include contributions to Mathematics and Physics that are indispensable tools for the study of Astronomy. If the tradition of seeking knowledge as Islam emphasizes had continued, Astronomy would have continued to flourish among Muslim scholars and no doubt have been centuries ahead of our time as we have seen from the expositions in the previous sections as highlighted in the holy Qur’an.

Greek works were translated by Muslim scholars in Arabic and they also added encyclopaedias of their own. When Europe later re-awoke, they translated the Arabic works and the Arabic translations of the Greek works. Star names were not translated but transliterated so that to date many many stars names are Arabic in origin. A look through any catalogue of stars, and one is immediately struck by the numerous names that appear to be Arabic in origin such as Aldabaran and Deneb. In an astronomical catalogue of almost 250 stars, over 140 of them had names that were Arabic in origin. Many new stars were discovered by Muslims. The book on stars of 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi was in fact translated into Spanish by Alfonso X el Sabio. The Muslims carried out many observations that were contained in astronomical tables called Zij. One of the most keen observers was al-Battani. The zij of al-Ma'mun observed in Baghdad, the Hakimite zij of Cairo, the Toledan Tables of al-Zarqali and his associates, the el-Khanid zij of Nasir al-Din al-Tusi observed in Maraghah, and the zij of Ulugh-Beg from Samarqand are among the most famous Islamic astronomical tables. These tables had significant influence upon Western Astronomy up to the time of Astronomer Tycho Brahe.
In Astronomy the Muslims integrated the astronomical traditions of the Indians, Persians, the ancient Near East and especially the Greeks from the 8th century onward. The Almagest of Ptolemy, the name of which is Arabic in origin, was thoroughly studied and its planetary theory criticized by several astronomers of both the eastern and western lands of Islam. A major critique of the theory was developed by Nasir al-Din al-Tusi and his students especially Qutb al-Din al-Shirazi, in the 13th century.
The first astronomical observatory as a scientific institution was the observatory of Maraghah in Persia established by al-Tusi. Later European observatories indirectly followed this model. The most famous astronomical instrument, the astrolabe was developed by Muslims to carry out observation. There existed even mechanical astrolabes perfected by Ibn Samh that can be considered as the predecessor of the mechanical clock.
The Muslims also applied their astronomical knowledge to questions of time-keeping and the calendar in making almanacs, this word too being Arabic in origin. The most exact solar calendar existing to this day is the Jalali calendar which was developed under the direction of 'Umar Khayyam in the 12th century. This is still in use in Persia and Afghanistan.
In the field of Mathematics, Muslims began by integrating Greek and Indian mathematics. The first great Muslim mathematician, al-Khwarazmi, who lived in the 9th century, wrote a treatise on arithmetic that brought the Arabic numerals to the West. He is also the author of the first book on algebra. The term algebra itself comes from the first part of the name of the book of al-Khwarazmi, entitled Kirah al-jabr wa'l-muqabalah. Abu Kamil al-Shuja' discussed algebraic equations with five unknowns. The science was further developed by such figures as al-Karaji until it reached its peak with Khayyam who classified by kind and class algebraic equations up to the third degree. The brothers Banu Musa who lived in the 9th century may be said to be the first outstanding Muslims in the field of geometry while their contemporary Thabit ibn Qurrah helped lay foundations of integral calculus. Muslims scholars also developed trigonometry that was established as a distinct branch of mathematics by al-Biruni. Calculus, trigonometry and geometry are the cornerstones of solving problems in Astronomy.

Other Muslim mathematicians such as Khayyam and al-Tusi examined Euclidean geometry that is the geometry of flat surfaces. The Muslim mathematicians, especially al-Battani, Abu'l-Wafa', Ibn Yunus and Ibn al-Haytham, also developed spherical Astronomy. Euclidean and spherical geometry are particularly useful in studying the overall geometry of the Universe in the study of cosmology.
The works of Ibn Sina, Abu'l-Barakat al-Baghdadi, Ibn Bajjah and others led to the development of the idea of impetus and momentum, principles in Physics that are applied to motion of bodies in Astronomy. Another area that is important in Astronomy is optics. It is very relevant in the development of tools for observation like telescopes that employ lenses or mirrors. Ibn al-Haytham (the Latin Alhazen) who lived in the 11th century was one of the greatest student of optics between Ptolemy and Witelo. Ibn al-Haytham's main work on optics, the Kitab al-manazir, was also well known in the West as Thesaurus opticus. Ibn al-Haytham studied the property of lenses, discovered the camera obscura, explained correctly the process of vision, studied the structure of the eye, and explained for the first time why the sun and the moon appear larger on the horizon (very simply put, it is because the thicker layer of atmosphere at the horizon acts as magnifying lens compared to overhead). His interest in optics was carried out two centuries later by Qutb al-Din al-Shirazi and Kamal al-Din al-Farisi. It was Qutb al-Din who gave the first correct explanation of the formation of the rainbow.
Muhammad ibn Jabir al-Battani , one of the top twenty astronomers in the history of civilization comments
“ [Astronomy] has a well earned place among disciplines for its tremendous share in helping man calculate years and months, provide accurate time, mark seasons, observe increase and decrease in duration of days and nights, watch locations and eclipses of the sun and the moon, witness the movements of planets in their faring in alternating places and signs. Much more may be added by it through study and scrutiny that invariably leads to further proof and knowledge of the greatness, wisdom, and power of the Creator (SWT)”
The holy Qur’an is full of gems of expositions in Astronomy - a sprinkling of which have been highlighted in this article. That in itself should be an inspiration to Muslim scholars to continue in the present day the pursuit of knowledge in the Sciences. Like in the days of yore, we should strive to develop a culture that is scientifically rich in the understanding of natural phenomena by “men of understanding”.
In the past few years, there has been a concerted effort by many well-informed Muslims of the need to use Astronomy for the establishment of the beginning of the months. In this connection it is useful to note the following verse from the holy Qur’an:

“The sun and moon (are subjected) to calculations.” [Quran 55:05]
The informed Muslim community are now taking these matters very seriously and
there is an international effort via CFCO (Committee For Crescent Observation), an active society since 1978, and the more recent ICOP (Islamic Crescent Observation Project), both of which include members from all over the world whose job it is to observe the crescent young moon not only for the months indicating the beginning Ramadan or its end, but all year long. This issue has been a bone of contention time and time again among Muslims. In this connection, it would be useful to highlight the words of noted fiqh scholar Dr. Taha Jabir al-Alwani from his book Ijtihad1 with respect to the sighting of the moon for the start and end of the holy month of Ramadan. Dr. al-Alwani in pointing out the necessity and significance of Ijtihad in relation to Time-Space factor uses the sighting of the moon as an example, and I quote him:

Ijtihad (1993) Published by International Institute of Islamic Thought,USA. p. 27

”…It could never have been the prophet’s intention to make life so difficult when he established that rule. He was, at that time, addressing illiterate people, and the best they could do to establish the beginning of the month was to see the moon with the naked eye. They had no other means and Allah (SWT) did not wish to make matters difficult or impossible for them. But when there exists more accurate instruments to determine the same fact, it would be totally unacceptable, and indeed backward looking, if insistence is on using out-dated and inadequate methods. The message of Islam is intended for all people in all ages; it was never restricted to the first hijri century Arabs of Makkah. Therefore, to stick to the literal meaning irrespective of the time factor is a benighted approach which is conducive neither to enlightment nor to progress.”
One can be guided by astronomical calculations to help one to know when and where to search for the crescent moon. This has brought to light that many countries have hitherto been in error in establishing the beginning of the new month, Saudi Arabia included. Some have accepted they have been in error and are now revising their position on that count. It is important that we do not follow blindly but we seek to understand and convince ourselves of the correctness of methods employed. The modern era of internet access and electronic communication seeks to educate and unite us as Muslims like we never could before.
There are now several different softwares available for calculating the dates and times of new moons, prayer times and qibla direction. The study of Astronomy is not something to be afraid of - it enlightens us and guides to a deeper understanding and appreciation of our religion and recognition of the omnipotence of our Creator. There is nothing wrong if in searching for the crescent moon we know when and where to look for it. Over and over the Qur’an emphasizes the aspect “for men of understanding”. We need to listen to that, surely there is great importance and relevance for it to be repeated so many times

The Prophet Muhammad  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) has said “ Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave”. Islam is about a lifetime of learning. A lifetime of learning means we can never know or understand everything. It is a dynamic process and we must continue to strive at all times.
“Verily, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the succession of night and day, there are indeed messages for all who are endowed with insight, [Quran 3:190]
(and) who remember God when they stand, and when they sit, and when they lie down to sleep, and (thus) reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: “ O our Sustainer! Thou hast not created (aught of) this without meaning and purpose. Limitless art Thou in Thy glory! Keep us safe, then from suffering through fire!” [Quran 3:191]
“Praise the name of your Lord, the Most High, Who creates and proportions well, Who determines and guides” [Quran 87:1-3]
